Lao President Meets Xi Jinping in Beijing

This Week

Lao President and Party General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith met Chinese President and Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping in Beijing on 5 June.

At the Great Hall of the People, the presidents reaffirmed the two countries’ strategic partnership and oversaw the signing of 32 cooperation agreements on trade, investment, agriculture, energy and human resource development. The meeting is part of Thongloun’s state visit to China from 2 to 6 June.

According to the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders discussed the future direction of bilateral relations and pledged to accelerate implementation of the master plan for building a stronger Laos-China community.

Thongloun thanked Xi and the Chinese leadership for the warm reception extended to the Lao delegation during visits to Beijing and Zhejiang Province, describing the visit as a reflection of the countries’ long-standing comprehensive strategic partnership under the “Four Good Principles” of friendship.

He praised China’s economic and social development achievements under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and said Laos viewed China’s development experience as a valuable reference for its own modernization efforts.

The Lao leader also expressed appreciation for China’s historical support during Laos’ struggle for national independence and for ongoing assistance to national development projects.

Following the meeting, the two sides issued a joint declaration on building a stronger Laos-China partnership of shared future in all circumstances.

Thongloun also invited Xi to visit Laos. Xi accepted the invitation and said he would visit at an appropriate time.

The China trip marks the latest high-level exchange between the two countries, whose relations have deepened significantly in recent years following the launch of the Laos-China Railway in 2021. The visit comes less than a year after Thongloun traveled to China in September 2025, when he met Xi Jinping in Beijing and both sides pledged to advance a new five-year action plan for building a Laos-China community with a shared future.

During the current visit, Thongloun also traveled to Zhejiang Province, where he met provincial leaders and visited technology companies including Alibaba Group and robotics manufacturer Hangzhou Yunshen Technology. Lao officials said the visit highlighted opportunities for expanded investment in tourism, agricultural processing, digital technology and other sectors linked to Laos’ economic development goals.
