Khammouane has signed a concession agreement worth more than USD 1.2 million to develop a stretch of land in Ban Pha Laem, Thakhek District, into a new nature tourism destination called Khounnamphone.
The provincial committee signed the agreement with KK Tourism Development Sole Co., Ltd. on 23 September. The company already operates several attractions in the province, including Tha Farang, Vang Sikham, Xiangliap Cave, and The Lotus Camp Resort.
The project will divide the site into 20 zones over the next 50 years. Five zones will support tourism development, while 15 will remain conservation areas.
The project has a total investment value of USD 1,207,350, including USD 500,000 in registered capital. The provincial governor approved the concession on 5 August, allowing the project to move forward.
Officials have not yet detailed what activities or facilities Khounnamphone will offer visitors.
Part of a Wider Tourism Push
Khammouane is turning to private investment to develop its natural attractions and attract more tourists.
Around 73,000 people visited the province in the first six months of 2026, generating more than LAK 148 billion (USD 6.6 million), according to Lao state media. Visitors from China and other parts of Asia made up the largest share.
The province currently has 198 recognised tourist sites. Its best-known destinations include Kong Lor Cave, the Limestone Forest, Tham Pa Fa Cave, Tad Namsanam, Tad Mouang, and Khoun Kong Leng Lake.
Provincial authorities plan to use private investment to develop tourism facilities around these sites. The Khounnamphone project follows the same approach, with a private company developing and managing the tourism and conservation area.
