The traffic police on Route 13 South between Bolikhamxay and Khammouane Province have started distributing free helmets and water to passing motorists.
Ahead of New Year celebrations, the Traffic Police Department and the Department of Public Works have set up roadside checkpoints in the two provinces to distribute water and helmets from 29 December to 2 January.
Police are more vigilant during this time as there are a lot more vehicles on the road with people returning to their hometowns, sightseeing, celebrating, and some potentially driving under the influence of alcohol which could lead to accidents.
Road No. 13 South runs from Thaphabat District, Bolikhamxay Province to Xe Bangfai District, Khammouane Province, with a distance of 275 kilometers and is currently under repair and improvement.
The ongoing activities have been attempting to raise awareness of road safety in the bridge sector project Phase 2 (LRSP2+AF) supported by the World Bank.
Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Public and Security have informed residents that strict traffic measures will be in effect during the New Year period.
