Xekong Province Takes Action to Combat Growing School Dropout Rates

This Week

Xekong Province is stepping up efforts to address the rising school dropout rates, which continue to challenge local education systems, authorities said.

Provincial officials are focusing on the government’s educational plan to develop the region’s schools and keep students enrolled.

Khamphay Simmavath, Head of the Provincial Department of Education and Sports, discussed the issue during the 8th General Meeting Session of the Province. He noted that while some of the development goals have been met, progress in education—particularly at the primary and secondary levels—has been slower, with dropout rates continuing to rise.

The official also said that the provincial and related authorities are willing to continue enforcing educational laws and regulations. Public awareness campaigns will inform communities about the legal responsibilities surrounding education, encouraging both students and parents to prioritize school attendance.

The provincial government plans to collaborate with village and district authorities, as well as the Provincial Department of Education and Sports, to create a comprehensive solution. Their objective is to meet 15 key educational targets, with particular attention to reducing dropout rates.

Proposals will be made to support schools that currently do not offer lunch programs, as only 35 percent of schools provide this benefit. Financial aid will be sought to ensure that disadvantaged students can continue their education.

Dropout rates in other regions, such as Vientiane Capital and Bokeo, have also been concerning, with the northern province’s rate reaching almost 40 percent in 2024.

Contributing factors include financial hardship and lack of interest in schooling. In response, the government is working with both local and international partners, which have provided funding to improve educational infrastructure across Laos.
