Asian Productivity Organization: Tokyo Statement on the Centrality of Productivity

TOKYO, JAPAN – Media OutReach – 9 June 2021 – As the economic and humanitarian crises in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic escalate to epic proportions and the world reels at the grim prospects of viral variants described as “far more deadly” by the WHO, the 21 countries that make up the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) offer a sliver of hope by declaring their resolve to continue the productivity movement, leveraging it to guide the region through new, harsh challenges in the years ahead.

Survival is paramount. Enterprises and SMEs must be resilient and the workforce adaptable to new workstyles and new types of business. Productivity is the foundation of this survival, not only for becoming more competitive but also in the broader, philosophical sense of “making tomorrow better than today.”

Drawing upon its 60 years of engagement in Asia and the Pacific, the APO crystallizes the key lessons of its six decades of journey in a joint statement, “The Tokyo Statement on the Centrality of Productivity.” Issued at the conclusion of its 63rd Governing Body Meeting on 9 June 2021, the statement serves as a beacon to traverse a turbulent future.

The statement outlines key priority targets of the APO for 2021–2025. Those targets support the APO Vision 2025 in striving for “inclusive, innovation-led productivity growth in Asia and the Pacific.”

The priority targets cover four broad areas. The first is leveraging new drivers of productivity. In today’s extraordinary circumstances, productivity improvement efforts must yield extraordinary results. New drivers that include innovation, advanced technologies, and digitalization are expected to lead to exponential productivity gains.

The second involves enhancing productivity tools, techniques, and methodologies. Upgrading and upskilling are imperative given ongoing rapid, dynamic changes. New business styles, new work styles, and new business platforms have become the norms. Productivity tools, techniques, and methodologies must therefore be continuously updated to support the latest trends.

Third is making productivity more inclusive. This means broadening the outreach and applications of productivity to embrace persons with different abilities, in addition to women, youth, and socially vulnerable groups.

The fourth priority is strengthening National Productivity Organizations as the premiere productivity-promoting institutions, equipping them to be policy partners for their governments.

The Tokyo Statement underlines a renewed commitment to the mutual cooperation that has been the hallmark of the APO. The full text is available at: www.apo-tokyo.org.

About the APO

The Asian Productivity Organization (APO) is an intergovernmental organization committed to improving productivity in Asia and the Pacific. Established in 1961, the APO contributes to the sustainable socioeconomic development of the region through policy advisory services, institutional capacity-building efforts, sharing of productivity best practices, and dissemination of productivity data and analyses.

The current APO membership comprises 21 economies: Bangladesh; Cambodia; Republic of China; Fiji; Hong Kong; India; Indonesia; Islamic Republic of Iran; Japan; Republic of Korea; Lao PDR; Malaysia; Mongolia; Nepal; Pakistan; Philippines; Singapore; Sri Lanka; Thailand; Turkey; and Vietnam.

Nefilim Ransomware Targets Victims with $1 Billion Revenue

Trend Micro report takes a deep dive into one of the most successful threat groups in modern

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 9 June 2021 – Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global cybersecurity leader, today released a case study of the Nefilim ransomware group, providing insight into the inner-workings of modern ransomware attacks. The report gives valuable insight into how ransomware groups have evolved, operate under the radar and how advanced threat detection and response platforms can help stop them.

The approach of modern ransomware families makes detection and response significantly more difficult for already stretched SOC and IT security teams. This matters not only to the bottom line and corporate reputation, but also the wellbeing of SOC teams themselves.

To read the report “Modern Ransomware’s Double Extortion Tactics and How to Protect Enterprises Against Them”: https://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/hk/security/news/cybercrime-and-digital-threats/modern-ransomwares-double-extortion-tactics-and-how-to-protect-enterprises-against-them.

“Modern ransomware attacks are highly targeted, adaptable and stealthy – using proven approaches perfected by APT groups in the past. By stealing data and locking key systems, groups like Nefilim look to extort highly profitable global organizations,” said Bob McArdle, director of cybercrime research for Trend Micro. “Our latest report is a must-read for anyone in the industry who wants to understand this fast-growing underground economy inside-out, and how solutions like Trend Micro Vision One can help them hit back.”

Of the 16 ransomware groups studied from March 2020 to January 2021, Conti, Doppelpaymer, Egregor and REvil led the way in terms of number of victims exposed—and Cl0p had the most stolen data hosted online at 5TB.

However, with its ruthless focus on organizations posting more than $1 billion in revenue, Nefilim extorted the highest median revenue.

As the report reveals, a Nefilim attack typically involves the following stages:

  • Initial access that exploits weak credentials on exposed RDP services or other externally facing HTTP services.
  • Once inside, legitimate admin tools are used for lateral movement to find valuable systems for data theft and encryption.
  • A “call home” system is set up with Cobalt Strike and protocols that can pass through firewalls, like HTTP, HTTPS and DNS.
  • Bulletproof hosting services are used for C&C servers.
  • Data is exfiltrated and published on TOR-protected websites later to extort victim. Nefilim published around 2TB of data last year.
  • Ransomware payload is launched manually once enough data has been exfiltrated.

Trend Micro has previously warned of the widespread use of legitimate tools such as AdFind, Cobalt Strike, Mimikatz, Process Hacker, PsExec, and MegaSync, to help ransomware attackers achieve their end goal while staying hidden. This can make it challenging for different SOC analysts looking at event logs from different parts of the environment to see the bigger picture and spot attacks.

Trend Micro Vision One monitors and correlates suspicious behavior across multiple layers—endpoints, emails, servers, and cloud workloads—to ensure there’s no hiding space for threat actors. This makes for faster incident response times, and teams can often stop attacks before they’ve had a chance to make a serious impact on the organization.

Entrust 2021 Hong Kong Encryption Trends Study Shows Increased Focus on Cloud Data Protection Across Region

Conducted by the Ponemon Institute, the 16th annual study highlights regional adoption of enterprise-wide encryption faster than global averages

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 9 June 2021 – Security and IT professionals in Hong Kong continue to outpace the global average when it comes to the adoption of enterprise-wide encryption, with particular focus on cloud services and applications, as well as containers. This and other findings are highlighted in the Entrust 2021 Hong Kong Encryption Trends Study, part of the 16th annual multinational survey by the Ponemon Institute. The study reports on the cybersecurity challenges organisations face today, and how and why organizations deploy encryption.

Identified threats and priorities

Specifically, 54% of respondents in Hong Kong now have a consistently applied encryption plan/strategy, well ahead of the global average (50%) for the second year running. Also for the second straight year in Hong Kong, the biggest threats that might result in the exposure of sensitive data were employee mistakes (47% vs. 53% globally) and system or process malfunction, which increased from 30% to 36% (vs. 31% globally).

Currently, around six-in-ten (59%) organizations surveyed in Hong Kong transfer data to the cloud. This is up from 55% last year, but is expected to surge with an additional 24% planning to do so in the next 12-24 months. Similarly, just over half of organizations surveyed deploy encryption for public cloud services (51% vs. 46% globally) and Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) management support was cited as the fastest growing feature of cloud encryption solutions by 53%, up from 48% last year.

Furthermore, nearly half (47%) of responding IT professionals in Hong Kong deploy encryption for containers, the highest rate worldwide, up from 40% last year and far above the global average of 32%.

The growing role of hardware security modules (HSMs)

For Hong Kong IT professionals, the pain associated with key management is increasing, with two-thirds reporting a high rate of overall pain associated with managing keys or certificates. This is up from 61% last year and higher than this year’s global average of 56%.

Similar to last year, the top factor driving this is “no clear ownership” (74% vs. 64% globally), with inadequate key management tools in second place (58% vs. 46% globally).

Another factor to consider is the lower rates of hardware security module (HSM) adoption, with 40% of respondent organizations in Hong Kong using HSMs (vs. 49% globally). The fact that this is up from 34% last year, making it the 2nd highest increase worldwide, suggests that the benefits of HSMs – including the ability to help with key management – are being recognized in the region.

In fact, Hong Kong results indicate that the importance of HSMs to encryption or key management strategy is expected to increase from 63% to 79% over the next 12 months. Similarly, with the increased focus on cloud migration, when using HSMs to protect cloud applications a higher percentage of responding organizations in Hong Kong than any other region prefer to use HSMs they own and operate (54% vs 41% globally).

Over the next 12 months, respondent organizations anticipate greater use of HSMs for several use cases, led by TLS/SSL going from 38% to 78% year over year, the largest expected increase of any use case. Other leading use cases include database encryption (increasing from 25% to 45%), blockchain applications (from 13% to 30%) and payment transaction processing or payment credential issuing/provisioning (expected to increase from 26% to 40%).

“Organizations in Hong Kong are increasing their use of the cloud and containers as IT and security professionals focus on the risks associated with employee mistakes and system or process malfunctions. As they strive to protect customer information and intellectual property and to comply with data privacy mandates, organizations on average now use more than eight different products that perform encryption. This brings new challenges associated with discovering where sensitive data resides, deploying encryption technology and training users to use encryption appropriately,” said Michael Tai, Area Vice President, Greater China, Entrust. “Key management still causes a high level of pain, due primarily to concerns about key ownership and inadequate key management tools. As they deploy encryption for databases, containers and cloud applications, organizations in the region seek encryption solutions that offer scalability, tamper resistance with an HSM, but as cloud use increases, organizations prefer to own and manage the HSMs used to protect cloud applications.”

Amazon study: Across generations, shoppers in Singapore are keen to support local businesses

  • More than half of Gen Z shoppers in Singapore say they will consciously support businesses that give back to the community when shopping online
  • Comparing overall spending for the past year, Gen Z spent the most on Clothing and Accessories, while Millennial and Gen X loaded up on Groceries
  • 41 per cent of shoppers polled say lower prices compared to physical stores are a key motivator for online shopping.

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 9 June 2021 – (NASDAQ: AMZN) Amazon Singapore today released the results of a nationwide survey on consumer shopping behaviour in the past year, conducted by YouGov. Surveying 1,207 adults in Singapore, the study sought to explore the online shopping behaviour across three main generational groups in the country – Gen Z (born 1997 to 2009), Millennial (born 1981 to 1996) and Gen X (born 1965 to 1980) and looked at the items purchased in the past year, the impact COVID-19 had on shopping habits, and if the behavioural change is likely to shift post-pandemic.

Henry Low, Country Manager, Amazon Singapore said: “Customer obsession has always been at the heart of Amazon’s business globally. By keeping our finger on the pulse of changing consumer trends and behaviour, we ensure the user experience is optimised for customers’ shopping preferences. Armed with a deeper understanding of the trends shaping multigenerational shopping habits among our customers, Prime Day 2021 – held on June 21 and 22 – is a prime moment for Amazon to deliver exceptional savings on thousands of deals to all generations of Amazon Prime members in Singapore.”

Key Finding #1: More than half of Singapore shoppers are #ShopLocal fans, with Gen X-ers being the biggest supporters

Across generations, more than half of the respondents said that they will choose to support local sellers over buying the same product from an international seller if there are no price differences. Living up to their word, the study finds 48 per cent of Gen X shoppers confirming that they bought from local brands in the past 1 week or more recently, followed closely by Millennial (44 per cent) and Gen Z (34 per cent).

Amazon sees this similar trend among shoppers in our online store. In 2020, Amazon.sg welcomed more than 12,000 small businesses in Singapore, all of whom participated in Prime Day for the first time ever. This year, there are more than double the number of small businesses participating in Prime Day. Local sellers who participated in Prime Day observed stronger sales numbers during Prime Day than other months. Shoppers keen to support local and small businesses should visit Amazon’s small business storefront this Prime Day.

Key Finding #2: Gen Z shoppers in Singapore most likely to consciously support businesses that give back to the community when shopping online

While majority of all shoppers polled said they will support organisations that have a charitable component, 63 per cent of Gen Z shoppers said that for the same product, they would rather buy from a seller that gives back to the local community, versus one that does not, compared to 55 per cent of both Millennial and Gen X shoppers, the study revealed.

Shoppers looking to give back to the community can support local non-profit organisations (NPOs) through initiatives like the Amazon X Retail for Good Wishlist programme. A joint effort with the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), the programme lets shoppers purchase items listed on participating NPOs’ wish lists, while Amazon offers a nominal donation to each NPO on board to kickstart the programme. NPOs on the Wishlist programme include Singapore Children’s Society, Blessings in a Bag, Children’s Wishing Well, Club Rainbow, The Food Bank Singapore, Singapore Red Cross, SOSD, New Hope Community Services, Arc Children’s Centre, SHINE Children and Youth Services, The Singapore Association for the Deaf, and Willing Hearts. Amazon welcomes more NPOs to join the programme to further facilitate the Wishlist donation drive efforts.

Key Finding #3: While 90 per cent of Singaporeans were already seasoned online shoppers before the pandemic, the “new normal” saw shoppers spending most on Clothing & Accessories across generations

According to the study findings, Clothing & Accessories top the most popular product categories across all shoppers polled, followed by Health & Personal Care, and Groceries:

  1. Clothing & Accessories (59 per cent)
  • This category was the most-shopped among Gen Z (64 per cent), with the group spending 34 per cent of their total online spend – the highest compared to the other generation groups.
  1. Health & Personal Care (47 per cent)
  • Gen Z’s were the most health conscious, spending the highest proportion of their total online spend (25 per cent) on Health and Personal Care products.
  1. Groceries (46 per cent)
  • Groceries contributed to the highest proportion of Millennial’s (36 per cent) and Gen X’s (43 per cent) online spending. More Gen X (19 per cent) and Millennial (18 per cent) grocery online shoppers also carted out groceries online for the first time due to the pandemic.

Key Findings #4: 85 per cent of shoppers polled started buying Pet Supplies online due to the pandemic and said they would continue to buy Pet Supplies moving forward

Of all the product categories purchased since the start of the pandemic, shoppers across the generations said they will continue to buy the following online as often or more.

  1. Pet Supplies (85 per cent)
  • Despite coming in top, this category was overwhelmingly dominated by Millennial (90 per cent) and Gen X (88 per cent) pet supplies shoppers, with both generations driving demand in the Pet Supplies category.
  1. Beauty and Skincare (82 per cent)
  • 84 per cent of Gen Z beauty and skincare shoppers said they will continue to buy Beauty and Skincare products, compared to 85 per cent of Millennial and 75 per cent of Gen X shoppers.
  1. Books (78 per cent)
  • Gen X book shoppers emerged the most voracious readers with 82 per cent indicating they would continue to purchase Books online moving forward.

Key Finding #5: Gen X puts safety first while Gen Z motivated by wider international selection to shop online; low prices continue to motivate shoppers across generations

With the introduction of social distancing measures and heightened public health alerts, 2 in 5 Gen X shoppers (39 per cent) said the ability to avoid public spaces and stay safe is a key motivator for online shopping.

While 27 per cent of Gen Z shoppers said the availability of international selection is a crucial online shopping motivator, the highest compared to their Millennial and Gen X counterparts.

Lastly, with the majority of Singaporeans identifying as Bargain Hunters (32 per cent) and 41 per cent saying that lower prices are the top motivator for online shopping, it comes as no surprise that 23 per cent of shoppers rely on product comparison sites when making online shopping decisions.

Prime Day Returns to Singapore on June 21 and 22

In the lead up to and on Prime Day, shoppers across Singapore – whether it be Bargain Hunters, Practical Shoppers, Shopaholics or Informed Buyers – can gain exclusive access to a wide international selection of product categories, limited time offers, new launches, and get amazing deals and savings socially distanced and safely within the comforts of home.
