Spearheaded by Hyundai Motor Group, the MOU establishes a collaborative framework to build a comprehensive, self-sustaining hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong, targeted to be fully operational by the end of 2030. The collaboration will prioritise the development of waste-to-hydrogen technologies to convert landfill gas into clean energy, along with an immediate focus on piloting a liquefied hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. To enable full value chain integration, it also targets the deployment of customised hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles, including tour and airport shuttle buses.

Through facilitating public-private partnerships and inter-governmental collaboration, InvestHK is supporting Hyundai Motor Group and its partners to implement go-to-market strategies aligned with the shared vision for hydrogen ecosystem building.

This partnership will also position Hong Kong as a strategic base for Hyundai Motor Group’s hydrogen business expansion across the Asia-Pacific region.

Miss Wong said, “This collaboration marks a significant milestone in developing tangible, on-the-ground hydrogen applications to accelerate the green transition towards carbon neutrality. By combining Korea’s world-class technological capabilities with Hong Kong’s strategic urban context, Hong Kong could serve as an exceptional international demonstration platform for showcasing green and low-carbon technologies. If these cutting-edge innovations could be applied and scaled up successfully here, it will serve as a positive model and provide highly viable options for reference by modern cities worldwide.”

Ms Lau said, “Today’s multi-party signing is both a landmark moment for Hong Kong’s green economy and a clear signal that the city’s hydrogen ecosystem is gaining real traction. Over the past three years, InvestHK has helped leading hydrogen enterprises establish themselves in Hong Kong, several of which have since listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, raising over $2.5 billion in total. For businesses with global green ambitions, Hong Kong is where business growth takes shape.”

Historically a hub for East-West cultural exchange, Hohhot continues to play a significant role as a northern gateway in China’s opening-up strategy. By hosting this prestigious national cultural event, China reaffirms its commitment to fostering intercultural dialogue through museums, enhancing the sense of shared identity among the Chinese people, and promoting mutual learning and exchange between China and the international community.

The event was jointly organized by the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It brought together over 500 participants, including leaders from the museum and cultural heritage sectors, experts, scholars, and international guests, to explore innovative directions for museum development.

In recent years, Hohhot’s museum sector has experienced rapid growth, marked by continuous enhancements in public cultural service capabilities. The city has established a well-planned and distinctive museum system. The Hohhot Museum has pioneered a “one main museum with six branches” model, integrating premier institutions such as the Zhaojun Museum and the General’s Yamen. This approach has enabled the city to consistently present high-quality exhibitions, positioning museums as vital platforms for showcasing the cultural exchanges and integration among diverse ethnic groups, as well as promoting China’s rich traditional heritage.

The opening ceremony on May 18 at the Inner Mongolia Museum highlighted China’s museum achievements since the 14th Five-Year Plan, shared key cultural heritage updates, and emphasized museums’ role as bridges connecting history and the present, China and the world, and the hearts of all ethnic communities.

During the event, three major exhibitions were launched simultaneously. The Heaven and Earth in Harmony: Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Music Culture, the Rivers and Mountains Shining: The Historical and Cultural Display of Hohhot, and the Radiance of Gold and Jade: Colorful China. Featuring nearly 300 exquisite bronze, gold, jade, and stone artifacts from numerous cultural institutions nationwide, these exhibitions span 8,000 years of heritage and vividly illustrate the rich diversity and unity of Chinese civilization, as well as the history of ethnic integration and coexistence.

On the evening of the 18th, the “Museum Night” immersive performance debuted at Dazhao Square, blending ethnic art, intangible cultural heritage skills, and light and shadow effects to vividly showcase the captivating fusion of the three major cultures of the grasslands, the Yellow River, and the Great Wall.

Building on the momentum of the main event, Hohhot also launched the 2026 “Museum Season,” featuring a series of exhibitions, educational tours, and cultural tourism routes extending through the National Day holiday. This initiative fosters deeper integration between cultural heritage and the tourism industry, making cultural treasures more accessible to the public.

From its historic role as a hub on the Grassland Silk Road to its current status as a platform for civilizational dialogue, Hohhot’s high-caliber cultural offerings showcase the unique qualities and openness of Chinese civilization. The city’s museums truly serve as enduring bridges connecting China with the world and facilitating meaningful global exchanges.

Laos Approves 10-Year National Tiger Recovery Action Plan

Laos approved a 10-year tiger action on 22 May, coinciding with the 2026 International Day for Biological Diversity, setting a national roadmap to restore the conditions needed for wild tigers to return to the country.

The National Tiger Recovery Action Plan (NTRAP), which covers through 2035, comes more than a decade after the last confirmed wild tiger sighting in Laos, recorded in 2013 at Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area in the country’s north.

Linkham Douangsavanh, Minister of Agriculture and Environment, signed the action plan in March, with the Department of Forestry (DOF) leading its implementation alongside conservation organizations including World Wildlife Fund Laos (WWF-Laos).

Somvang Phimmavong, Director General of DOF, said the plan reflected Laos’ renewed commitment as a tiger range country to restoring connected tiger landscapes in alignment with the Global Tiger Recovery Programme. He added that the government was setting a clear national direction for tiger recovery and strengthening coordinated action across priority landscapes.

The plan identifies four priority landscapes.

Nam Poui National Protected Area in Xayabouly Province, bordering Thailand, holds Priority 1 status as the most feasible site for tigers dispersing naturally from Thai source populations. Three Priority 2 landscapes, Nam Et-Phou Louey across Luang Prabang, Houaphanh, and Xieng Khouang provinces; Nakai-Nam Theun National Park in Bolikhamxay and Khammouane; and Xe Pian National Park in Champasak and Attapeu in the south, require longer-term habitat and prey restoration before they can support tigers again.

Dr. Akchousanh Rasphone, Conservation Director of WWF-Laos, said the return of wild tigers would signal that broader conservation conditions were being restored, noting that tigers would only return when sufficient space, prey, and healthy ecosystems existed to support them.

She added that coordinated action and long-term commitment would be essential to restoring tiger landscapes and strengthening forest governance and regional cooperation, and confirmed that WWF-Laos remained committed to supporting the national effort.

Self-driving fleets from the nine provinces and regions along the Yellow River, inheritors of intangible cultural heritages, representatives from tourism and culture companies and tourists gathered in the geopark to experience the area’s ecological beauty and rich culture.

Covering a total area of 3,149 square kilometers, Kanbula boasts 176 geological relic sites of great scientific and aesthetic value. The coverage rate of the Maixiu virgin forest reaches 51.36 percent, and rare animals such as snow leopards and minks are often spotted, forming a beautiful picture of harmony between human and nature.

The UNESCO announced in April 2025 that Kanbula was officially added to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, marking the second UNESCO global geopark in Qinghai after Mount Kunlun UNESCO Global Geopark.

The event was filled with a festive atmosphere. A tourism promotional video for the “Pure Yellow River” tourism belt was displayed during the warm-up session, showcasing the magnificent scenery of snow-capped mountains and glaciers, Danxia landform and gorges, grasslands and wetlands, and cultural and historical sites along the Yellow River in Qinghai.

To help tourists better appreciate the beauty of the Yellow River, the event launched boutique travel routes for Qinghai’s “Pure Yellow River” tourism belt, including the origin of the Yellow River, Kanbula Danxia landform, Longyang Gorge and Hehuang Valley, providing visitors with a clear “must visit” guide.

Meanwhile, tourism promotion packages for the 2026 China Tourism Day were released, including ticket discounts at major scenic spots across the province, cultural and tourism consumption vouchers, hotel and homestay discounts, and preferential prices for cultural and tourism performances.

At a local fair, a dazzling variety of intangible cultural heritage products and agricultural specialties attracted large crowds of visitors. As the Kanbula UNESCO Global Geopark gains greater recognition, the specialties made with traditional techniques such as yak yogurt have become must-buys for visitors, said a local villager who was also a vendor at the fair. “Many villagers have earned more income by selling them. It has also enabled the flavors of Tibetan villages to reach beyond the mountains.”
