Thailand’s Anti-Corruption Commission initiates an Anti-Corruption Education curriculum to educate Thai children and instill integrity value in society

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Media OutReach Newswire – 4 April 2024 – Foreseeing many developed nations with a high Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), have courses to educate children and youth about morality, integrity, and other virtues, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) of Thailand has initiated an Anti-Corruption Education curriculum for Thai children so that they can realize the problem of corruption.

The NACC’s Secretary-General, Mr. Niwatchai Kasemmongkol, explained that corruption is one of the issues that countries around the global are concerned about. This is due mainly to its complexity and difficulty to manage. Corruption has a huge impact on the development of each nation, especially in developing nations. Corruption should be a problem that must be solved soonest. Corruption in Thai society during the past period has had enormous negative effects on the country and is a major obstacle to the country’s development in all dimensions. In The past, the form of corruption was direct, and uncomplicated such as accepting bribes, and procurement. However, nowadays it has changed to become more complex which is involved with a conflict of interest and policy corruption.

“Children and youth are the future and hope of the country we can instill the idea that corruption is an unusual thing in society. We should start educating and creating a culture against corruption in them since they are young. It’s like providing a vaccination for a disease. The education could be done starting from early childhood. We should focus on building a strong society to a level of ‘zero tolerance’ against corruption to create an anti-corruption culture, sufficiency, discipline, and integrity,” he said.

Thus, the NACC, Thailand has set up a subcommittee on creating an anti-corruption curriculum so that it can create a learning kit and media for educating children in order to build a strong society with “zero tolerance to corruption”.

The anti-corruption education curriculum consists of five courses:

1. Basic education curriculum (additional courses on corruption prevention)

2. Higher education curriculum (Youngster with a good heart)

3. Curriculum according to government service guidelines: military and police

4. A course to create lecturers who lead change towards a ‘zero tolerance’ against corruption society.

5. Coaching course for anti-corruption awareness.

All five courses have been improved for educating each targeted group of children and youth. To increase efficiency in teaching children, the NACC also selected learning media and tools from various sources both domestically and abroad for the basic education curriculum and higher education curriculum, which can be applied in different educational institutions. The curriculum focuses on creating correct knowledge and understanding about the meaning and scope of various types of corruption, both direct and indirect; the damage caused by corruption; and the importance of anti-corruption. An evaluation of the achievement of learning according to the curriculum for each age group of students is also arranged. This curriculum has also been promoted in other provinces covering in all regions of the country.

Not only creating curricula, the NACC has also developed an Anti-Corruption Education Platform, which is an information technology system in the form of a Web Application for use in teaching and learning. E-learning or online anti-corruption education courses can be accessed 24/7 at any time through a variety of devices, including mobile applications and the Virtual Museum, which is an educational innovation that supports learning through an online channel.

The NACC wants to create some changes in society. This starts with adjusting the thinking processes of children and citizens in order to lead to behavior change. Hopefully, an anti-corruption Anti-Corruption Education curriculum will create knowledge, understanding, and skills for learners or those who have completed training in thinking and distinguishing between personal interests and public interests, learning to be embarrassed, and ‘zero intolerance’ against corruption. Having a “STRONG” mindset: sufficiency mentality and resisting corruption, while being a responsible citizen to jointly prevent and combat corruption in Thai society. All of those are considered challenging goals of the NACC in driving the anti-corruption education curriculum toward future achievement. However, only the NACC could not do this, but we need cooperation from educational agencies as well as all educational institutions, the NACC’s secretary-general concluded.

OnePlus AI Is Coming: Opening a New Era of AI-Driven, User-Centric Innovation

Arriving on OnePlus devices from April, the new AI Eraser is set to redefine the mobile image editing experience

SHENZHEN, CHINA – Media OutReach Newswire – 3 April 2024 – Global technology brand OnePlus today launched its new AI Eraser image editing feature for OnePlus smartphones. Powered by OnePlus’ proprietary large language model, AI Eraser marks a revolutionary step forward in smartphone technology, liberating user productivity and creativity with more intuitive experiences.

Caption

“Empowering users with advanced, practical technology is what we live for at OnePlus,” said Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus. “We believe that the potential for generative AI on mobile devices is enormous, with the power to completely transform productivity and creativity. As OnePlus’ first feature based on generative AI technology, AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate user creativity through AI and revolutionize the future of photo editing, empowering users to create remarkable photos with just a few touches. This year, we plan to introduce more AI features, and we look forward to their upcoming availability.”

Leveraging the power of artificial intelligence and a series of advanced algorithms, AI Eraser enables users to effortlessly select and remove unwanted objects within images from the Photo Gallery. After the user highlights certain objects, such as pedestrians, trash, or imperfections in the image, the underlying AI analyzes the selected area and automatically generates a replacement background that seamlessly blends into the surrounding environment while suiting the overall style of the image, resulting in flawless, picture-perfect images.

AI Eraser is the result of a substantial R&D investment from OnePlus that has been undertaken with a commitment to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content. The proprietary LLM behind the new feature has been trained on a vast dataset that allows it to comprehend complex scenes. Through this advanced visual understanding, AI Eraser is able to intelligently substitute unwanted objects with contextually appropriate elements that naturally elevate the photo’s appeal, empowering users with the ability to make high-quality photo edits anywhere and at any time.

The development of AI Eraser closely follows OnePlus’ user-centric design philosophy, which places a premium on the value of real user applications. By eliminating the need for complex manual editing or the use of dedicated photo editing software, AI Eraser makes image editing accessible to all users regardless of previous photo editing experience.

“Greater convenience and efficiency driven by the fusion of AI and smartphones will empower people to spend more time doing the things they love,” said Nicole Zhang, General Manager of AI Product at OnePlus. “All OnePlus AI features are built from genuine user needs, and we will continue to invest heavily in developing more revolutionary AI-based features that move us closer to our vision for a more convenient future for all.”

With the launch of the AI Eraser, OnePlus continues to drive enhancements in user experience. Starting from April, the feature will be rolled out gradually to OnePlus devices including the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4. Laos Faces Uphill Battle Against Wildlife Hunting, Expert Urges Action

Wildlife on display at a local market in Laos (WCS)
Wildlife on display at a rural market in Laos (WCS).

Wildlife hunting remains a significant challenge in Laos, despite ongoing efforts by the Lao government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

According to a wildlife expert, who goes by the pseudonym “Ben” to protect his identity due to his involvement in national policy making, a significant factor driving illegal hunting is the demand for exotic dishes featuring wildlife. Ben noted that this demand primarily stems from tourists from neighboring Vietnam and China.

Tourism-driven Demand Fuels Illegal Hunting

The expert highlighted the role of organized tour groups in promoting the consumption of wildlife meat among tourists. These tour groups offer luxury banquets featuring exotic products, including pangolin and bear paws, contributing to the perpetuation of illegal hunting practices, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to address this concerning trend.

Numerous restaurants across Laos, often with ties to poachers and middlemen, capitalize on tourists’ quest for unique culinary experiences by offering dishes made from wildlife. This practice not only sustains but also exacerbates the demand for wildlife products, perpetuating illegal hunting in the country.

Despite this being a widespread issue, Laos has established laws aimed at combating these activities. According to the Penal Code, initial offenders responsible for minimal damage can undergo “re-education” rather than facing immediate penalties. However, assessing the value of the animal in question presents a significant challenge, often relying on fluctuating market prices.

For repeat offenders or individuals engaged in organized hunting endeavors, stricter repercussions are enforced. These penalties may include fines of up to LAK 10 million (equivalent to approximately USD 472.22) and imprisonment for a maximum duration of five years.

Enforcement Challenges in Rural Areas

Enforcement of wildlife protection laws, however, poses significant challenges, particularly in rural areas where illegal hunting has long been a cultural norm.

“In rural areas, hunting has never been seen as a crime,” Ben said. He also highlighted the difficulties faced by authorities in enforcing laws against individuals who hunt for food or to sustain their livelihoods.

Limited resources and the inability of offenders to pay fines further complicate enforcement efforts, creating a complex landscape for conservationists and law enforcement agencies alike.

Uncertainty Surrounding Conservation Rules

The Wildlife Conservation Society, a United-States nonprofit organization with conservation programs in Laos, highlighted the strict prohibition against hunting protected species in Laos. However, the uncertainty surrounding hunting seasons and areas complicates efforts to educate the public, ultimately resulting in the unintended hunting of animals meant for conservation.

Central to the challenge of wildlife conservation in Laos is the classification of animals into three distinct groups: protected species, managed species, and those that can be hunted in community areas.

Protected species, including majestic animals like elephants, tigers, and bears, are strictly off-limits for hunting. Managed species, such as pigs and deer, are subject to regulation, allowing for their controlled harvest by rural villages for subsistence purposes. However, the complexity arises from the lack of clarity regarding the specific seasons and areas where hunting is permitted, leading to inadvertent violations of conservation rules.

International Cooperation and Online Trade

The rise of online wildlife trade also presents an additional challenge for authorities, as it allows for the anonymous sale of protected species on social media platforms.

“Every day, protected species like pangolins, bear cubs, cats, monkeys, and turtles are being sold on Facebook,” Ben observed, pointing to the need for enhanced monitoring and enforcement measures to curb this illicit trade.

International organizations, such as the ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network, have also joined the fight against the illegal wildlife trade in Laos. While some progress has been made, major wildlife traffickers, known as kingpins, remain elusive.

“Members of the networks have been arrested in Thailand and Vietnam, but none of the kingpins or the major wildlife terminals have ever been arrested in Laos,” the expert revealed, highlighting the need for greater international cooperation to apprehend these elusive criminals.

Furthermore, Laos serves as a convenient gateway for trafficking wildlife from Africa to consumer markets in countries like Vietnam and China. While these products are not used in Laos, the country’s geographical location makes it vulnerable to smuggling activities. This international dimension adds complexity to conservation efforts, as it requires strong international cooperation to combat wildlife trafficking effectively.

Ben further noted the difficulties of enforcing wildlife protection laws in Laos, citing the country’s extensive porous borders and the high demand for wildlife products in neighboring nations. Notably, Laos shares its borders with five countries, two of which are significant consumers of wildlife products. This geographical proximity poses challenges in regulating trade. Ben highlighted the necessity of international cooperation to effectively investigate smuggling networks that span across borders and involve individuals residing in other countries.

Local Efforts to Combat Threats to Wildlife

The expert emphasized the importance of community involvement alongside enforcement and education efforts. He suggested that empowering local communities to responsibly manage and derive benefits from wildlife resources could play a pivotal role in mitigating illegal hunting and trade.

Despite ongoing challenges, authorities are actively engaged in efforts to combat threats to wildlife, as demonstrated by the recent rescue of 16 bear cubs by Free the Bear in the Sikhottabong district of Vientiane Capital on 17 March. Although the origins of these bears remain unknown, reports indicate that they are currently receiving medical care at a center in Luang Prabang and are slated for eventual release into the wild.
