Shanghai tops South Korean tourist destinations

SHANGHAI, Jan. 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from korean.shanghai.gov.cn

Shanghai has become the top choice for South Korean tourists, due to China’s 240-hour transit visa-free policy.

According to LY.com, a leading Chinese travel platform, South Korean tourist arrivals in Shanghai have surged since mid-December 2024.

In addition, Huangpu district has emerged as the most popular area among South Korean visitors.

An LY.com research institute representative highlighted Huangpu district’s cultural and historical appeal. Iconic attractions, such as the Yuyuan Garden and the Bund, continue to draw significant attention.

The district also holds historical significance for South Korean visitors, as the former site of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea is located there.

Pudong New Area is another hotspot, attracting visitors with its world-famous Shanghai Disney Resort and iconic Lujiazui skyline — which features landmarks like the Shanghai World Financial Center, the Jin Mao Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Oriental Pearl Tower.

Beyond sightseeing and shopping, South Korean tourists are immersing themselves in Shanghai’s culture, exploring trendy spots like cafes, bars, and night markets. Many document their travel experiences on social media, showcasing tightly packed itineraries designed to maximize their time and budget.

Shanghai’s modern infrastructure and convenient transportation system further enhance the visitor experience. Weekly flights between South Korea and Shanghai are heavily booked, with Busan showing a 115.8 percent year-on-year growth, followed by Seoul and Jeju, from mid-December 2024 to early January 2025. Local hotels have also introduced packages specifically for South Korean tourists to lower costs and boost satisfaction.

The hospitality data reflects this growing demand. From Dec 21, 2024, to Jan 12, 2025, the average occupancy rate at the Mehood Elegant Hotel near the Bund topped 91 percent, while the Shanghai Elong Hotel reported that its rates were above 98 percent. A representative of the Elong attributed the rise to the favorable visa policies and the increasing international bookings.

About DHL GoGreen Plus Alumni Prize

DHL has teamed up with Redress to launch the “DHL GoGreen Plus Alumni Prize” in 2024. This prize challenges Redress Alumni designers to upcycle retired DHL uniforms into a fashion or accessory item, extending the life of the garments. The winning designer will be celebrated through marketing activities from both DHL and Redress, and will receive DHL shipping credits worth HK$50,000. This support is designed not only to facilitate the growth of their brand but also to empower the designer in their aspiration to expand into global markets.

About Redress

Redress is a Hong Kong-based, Asia-focused environmental NGO with a mission to accelerate the change to a circular fashion industry by educating and empowering designers and consumers so as to reduce clothing’s negative environmental impacts. Since 2011, Redress has organized the Redress Design Award to educate designers about the negative environmental impacts of fashion and inspire them to incorporate sustainable design techniques such as zero-waste, upcycling, and reconstruction to minimize waste in the industry. DHL Express is proud to be the official logistics partner of the “Redress Design Award 2024” with its GoGreen Plus service, which helps to reduce carbon emissions of the international shipments using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Through DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, the sustainable fashion collections created by 10 finalists from 9 different countries and regions have been delivered to Hong Kong for the Final on September 6, 2024, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. These carbon emission reductions and allocations are validated by a third-party auditor and Redress accounts for a 50% CO2e reduction compared to using conventional jet fuel.

Recent Cold Snap Damages Coffee Plantations in Champasack

Recent Cold Snap Damages Coffee Plantations in Champasack
Recent Cold Snap Damages Coffee Plantations in Champasack

On 14 January, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of Champasack Province reported significant damage to coffee plantations in Pak Song district caused by frost and fog over the past few days.

The cold snap, which affected both the crops and farmers’ livelihoods, has hit 37 families across 32.6 hectares of coffee fields.

Among the hardest-hit areas are Houaysan village, where 13 families manage 11.7 hectares, and Setapoung Village, home to 15 families overseeing 7.6 hectares.

Other affected villages include Nong Ya Thueng with six families and 7.3 hectares, and KM5 with three families and 6 hectares of damaged coffee crops.

In addition to these areas, a more recent survey by the Department revealed that frost and fog have extended their reach. The weather monitoring team, active between 11 to 14 January, identified further damage in Houay Set Village (20 families, 20 hectares), Kong Toun Village (9 families, 11 hectares), and Ka Touad Village (31 families, 7.8 hectares). Data collection continues as more areas report frost-related losses.

Farmers have shared their concerns that the frosty conditions are particularly severe in lowland areas, where the lack of shade trees has left crops vulnerable to the cold. This is not the first time the district has faced frost damage. According to the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, previous incidents occurred between 2005-2009 and 2015-2019, leaving a long history of crop destruction.

Since the onset of the cold weather, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry has been closely monitoring the situation and advising farmers on measures to protect their crops.

Among the strategies are creating smoke at various points in frost-prone areas, particularly low-lying or windy spots, and watering or shaking plants to help disperse fog. In addition, farmers are urged to cover their coffee plants with plastic to shield them from the chill, and to trim any damaged branches—especially those affected by more than 60 percent frost damage.

To help the plants recover, the Department also recommends applying foliar fertilizers to nourish the coffee trees and encourage healthy growth.

“As part of our Digital Transformation Program, this partnership will extend the speed and scale of our innovation and reformulation pipeline, with products always reaching higher standards of inclusivity, sustainability, and personalization”, declares Stéphane Ortiz, Head of Innovation Métiers & Product Development – L’Oréal Research & Innovation.

The creation of this AI model will use a large number of formulations and component data points to accelerate multiple tasks to be performed by L’Oréal, including the formulation of new products, reformulation of existing cosmetics and optimization for scale-up production – tools that will better equip L’Oréal’s 4,000 researchers worldwide over the next several years. In addition, IBM Consulting will support L’Oréal in its aim to rethink and redesign the formulation discovery process. Understanding the behaviors of renewable ingredients in cosmetic formulas will help L’Oréal build out more sustainable product lines with greater inclusivity and personalization for its consumers around the world.

Foundation models are a type of AI model trained on a broad set of unlabeled data, capable of performing various tasks and applying information from one situation to another. These models have significantly advanced the field of natural language processing (NLP) technology over the past several years, and IBM is pioneering applications of foundation models beyond language, in areas such as chemistry, time series and geospatial modalities. IBM’s AI technology has the potential to augment L’Oréal’s creativity in finding new cosmetic formulations to transform the beauty industry.
