What the Law Says: Food Safety Violations in Laos

This Week

In light of recent incidents involving tainted alcohol in Vang Vieng, the Lao government has confirmed three deaths suspected to be caused by methanol poisoning. This has led authorities to order the temporary closure of Nana Backpacker Hostel, where the victims had stayed. Alongside the closure, the government has pledged to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

While authorities have not yet released a statement regarding potential punishments for those involved, Article 183 of the Lao Penal Code outlines strict penalties for breaches of food safety and hygiene regulations.

Under this law, individuals found guilty of violating food safety regulations face imprisonment from three months to one year and fines ranging from LAK 1 million (USD 46) to LAK 10 million (USD 458) if their actions harm another person’s health.

If such violations result in severe injury, disability, or handicap, the penalties increase to six months to three years in prison and fines between LAK 3 million (USD 137) and LAK 20 million (USD 916).

In cases where violations lead to death, offenders may face two to five years in prison and fines of LAK 4 million (USD 183) to LAK 35 million (USD 1,603).

For multiple deaths, the penalties rise to five to ten years’ imprisonment and fines ranging from LAK 5 million (USD 229) to LAK 50 million (USD 2,290).

This law highlights the seriousness of food safety violations and serves as a critical reminder for businesses and individuals to prioritize public health and safety.
