Kratom TikTokers Arrested in Vientiane Drug Crackdown

This Week

On 18 February, authorities in Vientiane Province arrested two online Kratom sellers along with five of their customers for distributing and consuming the drug through social media platforms.

The Vientiane Province Public Security Department announced the arrests on 20 February, stating that the operation began after police traced five individuals consuming Kratom in Nalao village, Phonehong district.

During the crackdown, law enforcement officials confiscated 107 kilograms of Kratom and 200 grams of marijuana.

The detained individuals admitted to purchasing Kratom from two online vendors: Sengakhom, a resident of Vientiane Capital, and Khamphone, from Oudomxay. Both suspects allegedly marketed their products on TikTok and Facebook under the names @btkkathom and BTK Kathom.

Authorities also reported that the marijuana had been sourced from an individual named Lay, a resident of Phonehong district. This led to the subsequent arrests of all involved merchants.

Despite the arrests, officials have not yet disclosed the specific penalties the individuals will face.

Under the article 315 of Lao law, the production, concoction, distribution, sale, possession, import, and export of narcotic substances—including amphetamine, methamphetamine, and Kratom—carry severe penalties depending on the quantity involved.

Possession of 100 grams can result in 5 to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from LAK 10 million to 100 million (around USD 460.30 – 4,603)

For amounts between 100 to 500 grams, offenders face 10 to 20 years in prison and fines between LAK 100 million to 500 million. (around USD 4603 to 23,015)

Those caught with 500 grams to 3 kilograms can receive a life sentence, along with fines of up to LAK 500 million to 1 billion. (around 23,015 – 46,030).

If the quantity exceeds three kilograms, the punishment can be the death penalty.

When consumed in small doses, Kratom can enhance energy, sociability, and alertness. However, higher doses can produce opioid-like effects, including sedation, euphoria, and reduced pain perception.

Investigations are ongoing.
