Luang Prabang Scores Silver for Sustainable Tourism 2025–2027

This Week

Luang Prabang has set a new benchmark for sustainable tourism in Laos by earning the Green Destinations Silver certification for 2025–2027.

Soudaphone Khomthavong, Director of the Luang Prabang Provincial Culture and Tourism Department, accepted the award on behalf of Laos at the Sustainable Destinations Forum 2025 in Dubai on 28-29 October.

The recognition highlights the city’s efforts to protect its World Heritage values while developing tourism that benefits local communities.

To qualify, Luang Prabang underwent a rigorous evaluation process, submitting data for over 100 sub-indicators that were carefully reviewed during site visits by the Green Destinations audit team.

Authorities praised Luang Prabang for its clean environment, effective waste management, and community-based tourism programs that preserve culture and actively involve residents.

Luang Prabang became the first city in Laos, and among Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam, to achieve this distinction. With Silver certification in hand, the city now aims for Gold Level in 2026.

The Green Destinations organization, accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, recognizes destinations and tourism businesses committed to sustainable practices. Its certification includes five levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and full Green Destination certification.

In the first seven months of 2025, Luang Prabang welcomed 2,155,994 visitors, an increase by 983,483 tourists compared to the same period last year. The province also generated LAK 1,108 billion (approximately USD 52.76 million) in revenue.
