The Vientiane Capital Department of Public Works and Transport announced changes to traffic flow on nine road sections within the city center, effective 28 February, applicable to all road users across the capital
Among the roads that will be converted to two-way traffic are Don Chan Road along the Mekong Riverside, from the Pakpasak T-intersection to the Lao-German Technical College intersection; Rue Francois Ngin, from Fa Ngum Road to Setthathirath Road; Rue Nokeokoummane and Rue Manthaturath, both running from Fa Ngum Road to Samsenthai Road; and Gallieni Road in front of the French Embassy, from Setthathirath Road to Khouvieng Road.
In addition to these conversions, two roads will have their one-way directions reversed.
Fa Ngum Road will now flow from the Pakpasak T-intersection toward Thatkhao Road, while Chao Anouvong Road will flow from the Khun Bulom Road intersection toward Fa Ngum Road. Behind the French Embassy, Mahosot Road will have dedicated lanes added for BRT buses traveling in both directions, though general vehicles must continue using the existing one-way route.
Road users on Samsenthai Road should also note that turning left onto Sithane Road or toward the Vientiane Women’s and Youth Center for Health and Development (VWYC) is no longer permitted, in order to accommodate BRT bus lanes running counter to general traffic.
To support the transition, authorities will station officers at all affected sections during the initial implementation phase.
All motorists are urged to familiarize themselves with the new directions ahead of the 28 February effective date.
