Vietnam, China Congratulate Thongloun on Re-election as Lao President

Laos has received warm congratulations from Vietnam and China following President Thongloun Sisoulith’s re-election.

On 23 March, Vietnam’s top leadership has extended their congratulations to Laos’ newly appointed leaders, including Thongloun Sisoulith, who was elected State President, Sonexay Siphandone as Prime Minister, Saysomphone Phomvihane as National Assembly Chairman, and Viengthong Siphandone as Vice State President.

In their messages, Party General Secretary To Lam, State President Luong Cuong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, and Vice State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan acknowledged the significant trust placed in the new leadership. 

They highlighted the recognition of their capabilities, reputations, and contributions, particularly in advancing Laos’ revolutionary ideals and socio-economic development. The Vietnamese leaders reaffirmed the strong and continued relationship between the two countries.

The messages further highlighted long-standing cooperation and close political ties, with both sides expected to continue working together across key sectors.

Thongloun was re-elected on 23 March by the 10th National Assembly in a resounding vote of 171 out of 173. He will continue to serve as both President and General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party for the next four years.

China Reaffirms Strategic Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping also congratulated Thongloun on his re-election.

In his message, Xi said both countries are entering a critical period of development and expressed a strong commitment to deepening cooperation. Xi also highlighted that 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

In a separate message, Chinese Premier Li Qiang congratulated Laos’ newly re-elected Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and expressed China’s continued support for collaboration between the two nations.
