On 11 June, police in Vientiane Capital arrested seven members of a youth gang following an armed robbery that left a victim injured and his motorbike stolen with the gang member claiming to have around 200 members.
According to authorities, the arrests followed an investigation into a robbery that took place on 8 June in Nongpanai village, Sikhottabong district.
State security media side victims Xuen, 18, and Bin, 23, were approached by a group of youths while parked outside a roadside shop in Nongpanai village. Police said one suspect, armed with a traditional Lao sword, struck one of the victims on the arm before the group stole their motorcycle and fled the scene.
Following the incident, police arrested seven suspects aged between 14 and 17 on 11 June. Authorities identified the suspects as members of a youth gang known as “Soi Jone”
During questioning, police said the suspects admitted involvement in the robbery and claimed the gang has approximately 200 members. According to their statements, members typically gather in groups of eight to ten motorcycles and ride around Vientiane at night.
Police also said every day, the group targeted pedestrians and motorists using Ngao, knives, and imitation firearms to steal motorcycles, mobile phones, money and other valuables near Mekong River and Patuxay. The suspects reportedly told investigators that proceeds from the robberies were used to purchase kratom drinks and other items.
According to police, the gang had attempted to attack two people near Chao Anouvong Park, but the victims managed to escape. The suspects later encountered and targeted the two construction workers in Nongpanai village.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as officers work to identify and arrest additional suspects believed to be connected to the gang.
