Film Contest Promoting Gender Equality Announces Winners

The results of a short film contest promoting equality rights and titled “Gender and Violence Against Women Drama Contest”

were announced yesterday morning with prizes given to the winning teams.

The overall winner was Khoyhayjao which was acted and produced by the team, Idol and I Do, second place went to Daddy, Mommy, and Me acted and produced by the team Lego Film, while third place went to Okardthillorkhoy acted and produced by a team called the Women and Education Development group.

The winner received a trophy and a grand prize of 3 million kip, second place received 2 million kip, and third place got 1 million kip in prize money.

The other five teams that participated were congratulated and handed 500,000 kip each.

Khoyhayjao was selected as the winning film because it was the best in all aspects and reached the standard of the contest regulations including quality of light, colour, sound, and time, according to the judges.

The short film contest was a project aiming to promote gender and equal rights, the role of women in society, as well as to develop the film industry in Laos.

The project also aimed to encourage young people, especially students, to take part in shooting and producing film, promoting gender equality and preventing violence against women.

The project also served to remind the public to uphold the role of women and children in all areas of life and to recognise the importance of their protection and development.

The contest was organised by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and the Women and gender Development Association with support from the business community.

The contest began in April with eight teams submitting their short films while the judging panel scored and selected the winning films on July 5.

The prize presentation ceremony took place at the Department of Cinema in Vientiane and was attended by Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism and President of the Committee for the Advancement of Women and Child, Mr. Savankhone Razmountry.

Mr. Savankhone delivered an official opening speech and handed out the prizes to the winning teams.

A member of Idol and I Do, Ms Vilanda Boulommavong, told Vientiane Times she was veryhappythatherteamwonand wanted to thank the organising committee for putting the contest together.

“We were not sure that our team would win because we made the film in a limited time. But we are so happy to learn that it won. I am the main actress in the film and this is my first time acting in any film so it was very rewarding,” she added.
