World Elephant Day: Laos’ ‘Land of a Million Elephants’ Now Home to Just 500-1,000

Annual Elephant Festival in Laos Xayabouly province, celebrating elephant heritage and promoting conservation efforts. (Photo credit: Life is journey)

On 12 August, the world marks World Elephant Day, a day to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect these majestic creatures. In Laos, once known as Lane Xang – the “Land of a Million Elephants” – the elephant population has drastically declined.

Today, only 500 to 1,000 elephants remain, just one-third of the number from two decades ago. Conservationists warn that for every one or two elephants born each year in Laos, around ten die, putting the species at risk of disappearing from the country altogether.

Elephants continue to hold a special place as Laos’ national animal and a powerful cultural symbol.

Most wild elephants are found in the Nam Poui National Protected Area (NPA) in Laos’ northwestern Xayabouly Province, which spans 191,200 hectares across Phiang, Paklay, and Thongmixay districts along the Lao-Thai border.

This province also hosts the annual Elephant Festival, celebrating elephant heritage and promoting conservation efforts.

The Elephant Conservation Center in Xayabouly cares for the largest herd under human care in Laos, with over 25 elephants. Since the 2018 ban on illegal logging, many elephants once used in the timber industry have been redirected to tourism, while others have been sold to zoos, circuses, and breeders.

Global Elephant Population Under Threat

Globally, the situation is also critical. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), fewer than 50,000 Asian elephants remain in the wild, including only 8,000 to 11,000 in Southeast Asia, where habitat loss, poaching, and human-elephant conflict continue to threaten their survival.

Worldwide, about 450,000 elephants remain.

Asian elephants have been classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 1986.

Every year, an estimated 20,000 wild elephants are killed for their ivory, hides, and other body parts.

The Global Anti-Scam Summit (GASS) Asia 2025 returns to Singapore with a strong regional coalition against scams

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – 12 August 2025 – As scam networks across Southeast Asia grow more coordinated and transnational, the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) is responding with counterforce and progress. This year’s Global Anti-Scam Summit (GASS) Asia 2025 will be held on 2-3 September in Singapore and will convene over 1,200 industry leaders, policymakers, and enforcement agencies from over 60 countries (physical and online) to address the real-world strategies for preventing and disrupting online scams at scale.

“Scams are no longer isolated incidents, they are a systemic, cross-border threat. GASA’s role is to connect the dots, not just across sectors, but across borders, creating the shared infrastructure needed to act faster and smarter,” said Jorij Abraham, Managing Director, GASA. “Over the past year, we’ve scaled our membership, launched new national chapters in high-priority markets, and strengthened data-sharing through the Global Signal Exchange. The summit is where these efforts come together into concrete action.”

Exponential growth in partnerships

GASA’s membership has doubled globally, with the Singapore Chapter now exceeding 100 members, including major organisations such as Amazon, Google, MasterCard, Meta and Microsoft, alongside government, enforcement, and civil society stakeholders. Singapore’s role as a strategic testbed for anti-scam policy frameworks, technology pilots, and cross-sector coordination has made it a hub for regional collaboration.

In the past year, GASA has deepened its presence across the Southeast Asia region, having established chapters in two of the region’s important markets: the Philippines and Indonesia. These economies are heavily mobile-first, with widespread use of digital finance tools, making scams a significant consumer and economic threat. .

In Indonesia, the chapter is chaired by Reski Damayanti, Chief Legal & Regulatory Officer, at Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, one of the country’s leading telecom providers. According to GASA’s 2024 Asia Scam Report, 65% of Indonesians experience scam attempts every week, from phishing texts and fake job offers to investment fraud. With telcos increasingly targeted through phishing, SMS spoofing, and fake service alerts, the chapter will focus on industry-wide intelligence sharing, public awareness campaigns, and closer alignment with national authorities.

In the Philippines, the chapter is co-chaired by Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Chief Privacy Officer and Vice-President for Governance, Risk, and Compliance and Derick Ohmar Adil, Head, AI and Privacy Governance, at Globe Telecom. As one of the nation’s largest digital service providers, Globe has been at the forefront of consumer protection initiatives, from blocking malicious SMS at scale to launching awareness campaigns.

“These chapters are more than local extensions. They are strategic footholds in markets where digitalisation is instrumental in raising standards of living, yet scams threaten to undermine this. By bringing in national champions like Indosat and Globe, we’re embedding GASA’s model into the heart of each market’s digital ecosystem. It is heartening to see this community of scam fighters assembling a short 2 years after we led the establishment of GASA in this region.” said Rajat Maheshwari, Chair, GASA Singapore Chapter.

A stronger data backbone: Global Signal Exchange (GSE)

More than 35 organisations are now contributing scam signals to the Global Signal Exchange (GSE), supported among others by GASA, Google, GSMA, Meta, Microsoft and other key players. The GSE is a global clearinghouse for the real-time sharing of scam and fraud threat signals – URLs, domains, IP addresses, emails and more. Since its launch in January 2025, GSE has grown from 40 million to 370 million signals. More than 230 organisations are now onboarded or in the pipeline to join. During the summit, GSE will also announce an important milestone and honoured addition to its program.

Other key highlights at the summit include:

  • Fireside chat featuring Mr. Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development, Ministry of Health, and Patron of the GASA Singapore Chapter
  • Launch of the Southeast Asia Scam Report, presented by Rajat Maheshwari, Chair of the GASA Singapore Chapter
  • Panel deep dives on regional scam typologies, enforcement strategies, and cross-border disruption tactics
  • INTERPOL session on cybercrime operations and challenges in Asia
  • United Nations (UN) on trafficking networks linked to scam centres in Asia
  • Researcher and investigator Paul Raffile, on cyber extortion, impersonation scams, and blind spots in digital victim protection
  • The Anti-scam pitch room, showcasing real-world tools and early-stage innovation in scam prevention and detection
  • Launch of Anti-Scam resources by various GASA Members (e.g. Tech for Good Institute)

Life (Insurance) starts at 30 – when Aussies wish they’d signed up for coverage

BRISBANE, Australia, Aug. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — One quarter of Australians with life insurance wish they’d taken out their policy earlier in life, according to a new Budget Direct Life Insurance survey

The poll of 997 Australians with life insurance also reveals the age they recommend signing up.

Around 39% of people surveyed felt the best time to invest in life insurance was in your 30s, followed by your 20s (28%) and in your 40s (23%). Only 10% of respondents recommended waiting until your 50s or later.

“The top two moments of any adult’s life would have to be the birth of their first child and getting married,” said Budget Direct Chief Growth Officer, Jonathan Kerr.

“That usually happens for most Aussies in their 20s and 30s, so it makes sense that’s the prime age for making plans to take care of our families no matter what happens to us.”

Over 23% of Budget Direct Life Insurance customers take out their insurance when they are 20-35 years old.

Nearly 28% of respondents took out life insurance because of a significant life event.

The biggest factor for taking out cover was having children and/or other dependents (25%).

Just over 20% of respondents said they took out life insurance because of a marriage, while 5% said it was because of divorce.

When preparing their Will, 9% of survey respondents took out their policy either for themself or a family member.

“It’s interesting then, that 46% of people in our survey don’t have a Will,” said Mr Kerr.

“Although you don’t need a will to name a beneficiary of life insurance, it can certainly provide clarity around your wishes, should the unthinkable happen.”

Stand-alone life insurance:

  • Can be tailored to your unique circumstances
  • Coverage amount can be easily adjusted
  • Payouts can be quicker, with funeral advances available
  • Can nominate distribution of funds

The Budget Direct Survey revealed well over half of respondents (59%) had held their life insurance policy for longer than 6 years.

Only 10% of respondents took out their policy within the previous year, and one quarter (26%) wished they had held their policy for longer.

Singapore Witnesses the Future of Logistics Unfold at GoComet’s Odyssey 2025

Supply chain leaders gathered to experience intelligent technology and envision resilient supply chains.

SINGAPORE, Aug. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — At a time when global logistics is being tested by complexity and volatility, GoComet brought clarity with the successful conclusion of Odyssey 2025, the 7th edition of its flagship supply chain innovation summit, held on July 31st at the Shangri-La Singapore.

The invite-only event hosted over 100 supply chain leaders from global giants like Schneider Electric, Intel, Sanofi, Kenvue, and Yokohama. These attendees witnessed the unveiling of Agentic AI — GoComet’s intelligent AI copilot and a significant step toward autonomous supply chains.

Connect with Purpose. Evolve with AI

The evening’s highlight was the keynote by Dany Krivoshey, Head of Digital Transformation at Unilever, who took the stage for the night’s most anticipated moment: the conversation on Agentic AI, signalling the arrival of a new era.

Dany focused on transformation through purposeful design, empathy-led leadership, and the future of intelligent supply chains.

“We chose GoComet not just for today’s challenges, but for tomorrow’s scale. It’s a partnership built to grow with us,” Dany shared, underscoring Unilever’s focus on future-ready, adaptable solutions aligned with their global ambitions.

Technology at Speed: Air Cargo’s Automation Imperative

In his keynote, Milan Dhingra, Chief Product & Technology Officer at Teleport, shared insights into the urgent need for automation to enable faster and better cross-border eCommerce capabilities in the air cargo industry, especially across Southeast Asia’s $3 trillion economy.

“The challenge today isn’t access to data – it’s making it actionable. The next generation of logistics platforms must not just be fast; they must be intelligent,” said Milan.

He closed with a powerful message: “The Future is Real-Time, Individual, and Intelligent.”

In a powerful close, Chitransh Sahai, CEO of GoComet, demonstrated Agentic AI in action -processing real-world shipping requests, handling vendor interactions, and responding to disruptions without manual intervention.

“With Agentic AI, we’re showing the world how autonomous logistics can be practical, scalable, and transformative – today, not five years from now.”

He also introduced Incident Lens, a predictive intelligence engine, and GoVista, a smart Outlook-integrated assistant that summarizes shipment updates.

Odyssey 2025 moved beyond AI hype into real-world impact – demonstrating how organizations can use it to predict disruptions, increase OTIF performance, automate communication, and shorten lead times.
