First-of-its-kind Venture Capital Programme in Asia launches as NUS commits S$150 million to boost growth of deep tech start-ups

  • NUS will invest S$50 million (US$39 million) in selected venture capital (VC) firms to provide structured support for NUS tech start-ups.
  • S$100 million will be committed to an autonomous investment fund focused on NUS-affiliated start-ups, with the flexibility to invest alongside selected VC partners.

SINGAPORE, July 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Asia is grappling with a prolonged funding winter, with venture capital investments falling sharply to a 10-year low of S$85 billion (US$66 billion). With a five per cent decline from 2023, early-stage funding totalled less than S$38 billion (US$29 billion) in 2024[1]. To address the critical funding and mentorship gaps faced by tech start-ups, NUS Enterprise, the entrepreneurial arm of the National University of Singapore (NUS) — flagship comprehensive research university in Singapore, is committing S$150 million (US$116 million) to launch the NUS VC Programme.

The initiative aims to enhance support for early-stage tech innovation by focusing on high-potential ventures within the NUS ecosystem, including start-ups from the National Graduate Research Innovation Programme (National GRIP). National GRIP empowers innovators to transform lab-based research discoveries into globally competitive, market-ready ventures.

“As the region faces a sharp pullback in venture capital activity, we see the new NUS VC Programme — the first of its kind initiative by a university in Asia — as a critical enabler. Research-based start-ups face distinct challenges, including R&D cycles that are much longer than traditional start-ups, making them especially vulnerable in today’s cautious investment environment. This programme brings together capital, strategic partnerships, and specialised venture expertise to create a more resilient path from lab to market,” said Professor Tan Eng Chye, NUS President.

Beyond capital: Money and expertise

The programme comprises two key components.

First, NUS will commit S$50 million (US$39 million) over the next three years in selected venture capital firms with strong track records in early-stage deep tech investments. These firms will provide structured, hands-on support to start-ups, including time, expertise, and access to their networks to help them scale effectively.

The first two VC partners are Granite Asia, a leading multi-asset investment platform with a 25-year track record of backing breakthrough technology ventures globally, and 4BIO Capital, a specialist life sciences investor focused on advanced therapeutics. (Refer to Annexes A and B for details on the structured initiatives developed by NUS in collaboration with these partners and their quotes.)

Second, NUS will set aside S$100 million (US$78 million) for co-investments alongside these VC partners. These co-investments will be targeted at NUS-affiliated start-ups.

Complementing National GRIP with expert VC support for NUS start-ups

Many National GRIP start-ups are still in the early stages of technological readiness and require continued, strategic support to advance from lab to market. The NUS VC Programme complements the National GRIP framework by addressing this need for downstream venture development. While GRIP currently provides up to S$250,000 (US$194,000) in seed funding per start-up, the VC Programme focuses on accelerating post-seed growth and preparing ventures for external capital.

What sets this effort apart is the direct engagement with leading venture capital firms selected not only for their track records, but also for their market access in global innovation hubs. By combining capital with deep venture expertise, the programme offers structured support including mentorship, investor feedback, market entry, fundraising networks, and operational guidance.

“National GRIP is an important first step in helping deep tech start-ups take root,” said Dr Tan Sian Wee, NUS Senior Vice President (Innovation & Enterprise). “The VC Programme builds on this by pairing promising ventures with globally connected investors, enabling a more complete pathway to scale and commercial success. This is essential given that most start-ups struggle to move beyond early-stage innovation toward impactful, real-world deployment.”

Tag along with Jay at CISCE: The secret ingredient in global agriculture? Friends!

BEIJING, July 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — This is a report from China.org.cn:

Video Link: https://youtu.be/1Glsl4uuSfE

British visitor Jay Ian Birbeck explored the green agriculture section of the third China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE), an event showcasing the full breadth of the global supply chain, held in Beijing from July 16 to 20.

Jay visited his favorite section of the expo — the Green Agriculture Chain. As always, it was packed with exhibitors, including many international companies and brands, highlighting the event’s growing global reach. This year, the section received a major upgrade, showcasing premium supply chain displays from places like Qinghai, Ningxia, Heilongjiang, and Xinjiang, along with a rich variety of local specialties from across China.

While savoring the local delicacies and exploring the vibrant exhibits, Jay unexpectedly reunited with an Arab friend he had met during the inaugural CISCE. For them, the expo is not just a place to reconnect with old friends, but also a platform where brands and exhibitors from around the world come together to build new friendships, uncover opportunities, and forge win-win collaborations.

One such example is the CISCE success story of JiShuo Technology and Jinma Weighing Apparatus. After connecting at the first two editions of the expo, the two companies gained a deeper understanding of each other’s products and operations. This mutual trust paved the way for a partnership, culminating in a strategic agreement signed at this year’s expo to co-develop a more reliable and streamlined traceability and trading system for livestock products.

At the McDonald’s China booth, Jay discovered something new: the company had invited 11 upstream and downstream supply chain partners to jointly exhibit, each showcasing their operations and achievements in China. During the expo, McDonald’s China officially launched the “McDonald’s China Chain Pledge,” a collaborative vision for the future anchored in its “three-legged stool” philosophy — representing the brand, employees, and suppliers. Together, they aim to drive sustainable, long-term success through strong partnership and shared goals.

At the Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) booth — a first-time participant at CISCE — Jay experienced an innovative interactive display called the “Seed Tree.” By scanning a QR code, visitors can trace a product’s journey from farm to fork, gaining full transparency into its supply chain from origin to end consumers. Sharing her hopes for the expo, the LDC representative expressed excitement about meeting new partners, exploring new business opportunities, and working together to build safe, sustainable food and agricultural supply chains — for the benefit of current and future generations.

Long-term relationships are growing stronger, while new partnerships continue to develop. The green agriculture family just keeps getting bigger, bringing even more energy, diversity, and potential to the entire exhibition. The larger the network of friends, the stronger the supply chain grows. That’s what the supply chain expo is all about — and why it’s such a can’t-miss event!

SEMI Reports Global Total Semiconductor Equipment Sales Forecast to Reach $125.5 Billion in 2025

AI and Leading-edge Technology Transitions are Expected to Drive Three Consecutive Years of Growth through 2026

MILPITAS, Calif., July 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — SEMI today announced that global sales of total semiconductor manufacturing equipment by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are forecast to set a new industry record of $125.5 billion in 2025, a 7.4% year-on-year increase, according to its Mid-Year Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast – OEM Perspective. Semiconductor manufacturing equipment growth is expected to continue in 2026, with sales projected to reach a new high of $138.1 billion, driven by leading-edge logic, memory and technology transitions.

SEMI 2025 Mid-Year Total Equipment Forecast By Segment
SEMI 2025 Mid-Year Total Equipment Forecast By Segment

“Following strong growth in 2024, global semiconductor manufacturing equipment sales are forecast to expand again this year and set a new record in 2026,” said Ajit Manocha, SEMI president and CEO. “While the semiconductor industry is closely monitoring macroeconomic uncertainty, AI-fueled demand for chip innovations is driving investments in capacity expansions and leading-edge production.”

Semiconductor Equipment Sales by Segment

After registering a record $104.3 billion in sales last year, the Wafer Fab Equipment (WFE) segment, which includes wafer processing, fab facilities and mask/reticle equipment, is projected to increase 6.2% to $110.8 billion in 2025. This upward revision from SEMI’s 2024 Year-End Equipment Forecast of $107.6 billion is largely driven by increased sales to foundry and memory applications. Looking ahead to 2026, WFE segment sales are projected to expand 10.2%, reaching $122.1 billion. The growth is attributed to capacity expansions in leading-edge logic and memory to support AI applications, as well as ongoing process technology migrations across major segments.

The back-end equipment segment is anticipated to continue its strong recovery that began in 2024. Following that year’s robust 20.3% year-on-year growth, sales of semiconductor test equipment are projected to rise another 23.2% in 2025 to a new record of $9.3 billion. Assembly and packaging equipment sales grew 25.4% in 2024 and are forecast to increase 7.7% to $5.4 billion in 2025. Back-end equipment segment expansion is expected to continue in 2026, with test equipment sales rising 5.0% and assembly and packaging sales increasing 15.0%, marking three consecutive years of growth. The expansion is driven by significant increases in the complexity of device architectures and the robust performance requirements for AI and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) semiconductors. However, growth in this segment is partially offset by continued weakness in the automotive, industrial and consumer end markets.

WFE Sales by Application

WFE sales for foundry and logic applications are expected to show stable growth of 6.7% year-over-year to $64.8 billion in 2025, driven by robust demand for advanced nodes. In 2026, the segment is forecast to grow another 6.6%, reaching $69.0 billion. The growth will be supported by increased capacity expansion purchases and rising demand for leading-edge technologies as the industry progresses toward high-volume manufacturing at the 2nm gate-all-around (GAA) node.

Memory-related capital expenditures are projected to see an increase in 2025 and to demonstrate continued growth in 2026. NAND equipment sales continue to recover from a sharp contraction of 2023. After registering a modest 4.1% increase in 2024, the NAND equipment market is expected to see 42.5% expansion to $13.7 billion in 2025 and 9.7% to $15.0 billion in 2026, driven by advancements in 3D NAND stacking and capacity expansion. Meanwhile, DRAM equipment sales, which surged 40.2% in 2024 to $19.5 billion, are projected to grow at 6.4% and 12.1% in 2025 and 2026, respectively, supporting investments in HBM for AI deployment.

Semiconductor Equipment Sales by Region

Mainland China, Taiwan and Korea are expected to remain the top three destinations for equipment spending through 2026. China continues to lead all regions over the forecast period, though sales in the region are expected to decline from 2024 record investments of $49.5 billion. All other regions except Europe are expected to see significant increases in equipment spending starting in 2025. However, heightened trade policy risks may impact the pace of growth across regions.

The SEMI forecast is based on collective input from top equipment suppliers, the SEMI Worldwide Semiconductor Equipment Market Statistics (WWSEMS) data collection program, and the industry-recognized SEMI World Fab Forecast database.
