Saudi Arabia-China Entrepreneurs Association signs MoU with Hong Kong Trade Development Council

  • Agreement signed at the at Belt and Road Summit to promote trade and business between the two regions
  • Middle East delegation showcases market and growth opportunities in the Kingdom and beyond

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach – 16 September 2023 – Saudi Arabia-China Entrepreneurs Association has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hong Kong Trade Development Council (“HKTDC”) to promote trade and business between Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia. The MoU was signed during the eighth Belt and Road Summit on 13th September 2023, which was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the HKTDC. Under the theme of “Ten Years of Cooperation for Mutual Benefit,” the summit spanned two days and attracted nearly 6,000 government officials, business leaders, and entrepreneurs from almost 70 countries and regions. Over 100 delegations from overseas and Mainland China participated in various summit activities.

Jerry Li shares about investment opportunities in the Middle East

This year’s summit explored opportunities in emerging markets along the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly the Middle East markets and the South East Asia markets. In his opening speech, Mr. John Lee, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, expressed his belief in the potential of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Middle East regions. Since the full implementation of customs clearance this year, he has led business and professional delegations to visit these two regions twice, resulting in fruitful outcomes. Li cited his visit to the Middle East in February as an example, highlighting substantial achievements such as Hong Kong companies providing hydrogen-powered cars and refueling stations, offering energy-saving and environmental services, and planning cooperative ventures in the hotel industry. These accomplishments reflect the diverse business opportunities in the Middle East.

The Middle Eastern countries are key partners of the Belt and Road Initiative, providing extensive cooperation opportunities and potential for economic, trade, and infrastructure development with China. Focusing on the new opportunities, developments, and collaborations that the Middle East market offers under the Belt and Road Initiative, this year’s summit boasts the largest number of Middle Eastern guests in its history. Among them are notable figures such as Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Abdulla Bin Touq AlMarri, Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates, along with several Middle Eastern enterprises.

During the roundtable discussion at the Middle East session, Jerry Li, Founding Partner of eWTP Arabia Capital and Director-General of the Saudi Arabia-China Entrepreneurs Association, remarked, “The Middle East and Hong Kong are full of potential for cooperation and mutual benefit in the fields of finance, new energy, and digital technology. The Middle East has set numerous development goals to achieve its 2030 vision, while Hong Kong possesses world-class financial and technological talents, as well as industry clusters. Collaboration between the two parties will not only diversify the Middle East’s economy but also enhance Hong Kong’s international influence and reshape its position as a global financial center.”

During the Belt and Road Summit, Saudi Arabia-China Entrepreneurs Association (SCEA), a non-profit organisation initiated by eWTP Arabia Capital to boost cooperation between the private sectors in Saudi Arabia and China, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the HKTDC. The MoU aims to strengthen the commercial and economic ties between Hong Kong and the Middle East regions, particularly start-ups and service providers looking to expand beyond their countries of origin.

Since its establishment, Saudi-China Entrepreneurs Association (SCEA) has been committed to becoming a vital bridge between Hong Kong and the Middle East. In February this year, Chief Executive Mr. John Lee visited the Middle East and expressed his support towards the establishment of the SCEA in Saudi Arabia. In July, the SCEA officially announced the establishment of its first Asian office in Hong Kong and signed a MOU to cooperate with 11 Mainland China and Hong Kong companies and facilitate their entry in the Saudi market. Additionally, the SCEA assisted in facilitating the visit of His Excellency Engineer Abdullah Al-Swaha, the Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology, to Hong Kong in July, further enhancing cooperation between the two parties.

Operated by SCEA, eWTP Arabia Capital has established deep partnerships with the Hong Kong government, major financial institutions, industrial companies, and technological innovation platforms in Hong Kong since Chief Executive Mr. John Lee’s visit to the Middle East in February. Supported by the HKTDC, eWTP Arabia Capital has hosted more than 100 partners from various industries in Hong Kong, including real estate, finance, trade, technology innovation, and healthcare. Currently, eWTP Arabia Capital is actively facilitating the establishment of these institutions and companies’ presence in Saudi Arabia.

The delegation comprises COFE, a Kuwait-originated company that offers an online marketplace for coffee enthusiasts, Advanced Communications & Electronic Systems Company (ACES), a Saudi Arabia-based digital infrastructure company, and Navigator Consulting, a Saudi Arabia-based strategic consulting company. They were represented by Ali Al Ebrahim, Founder and CEO of COFE, Akram Aburas, CEO and Founder of ACES, and Alfred Wang, CEO of Navigator Consulting.

Justin Sun Speaks at the Prestigious Milken Institute Asia Summit

Continuously promoting industry breakthroughs, Asia will become an important crypto center

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach – 16 September 2023 – Justin Sun, the esteemed founder of TRON and a member of the HTX Global Advisory Committee, was cordially invited to participate in the highly anticipated 2023 Milken Institute Asia Summit on September 14. During this prestigious event, Sun engaged in a profound and insightful dialogue with Kirk Wagar, the President of Wagar Global Advisors and Former Ambassador of US to Singapore, focusing on pertinent issues concerning the future trajectory of the crypto industry.

image_1.jpeg

In the course of their conversation, Justin Sun expressed a notable viewpoint, highlighting the insufficient recognition of stablecoins as a significant real-world use case and there is vast potential of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in revolutionizing global settlement and payment systems. He believes that the key to effectively addressing these trust issues or alleviating market concerns lies in transparency and decentralization. Furthermore, he underscored the immense influence that Asia wields in the realm of crypto, solidifying its pivotal role in shaping the industry’s future.

Justin Sun: Firm Belief in Blockchain and Advancing the Crypto Industry

During the conversation, Justin Sun eloquently emphasized the lack of attention given to stablecoins as a significant real-world use case. He highlighted the immense potential of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in global settlement and payment systems. Illustrating this point with TRON as an example, Sun revealed that the blockchain currently hosts approximately $50 billion worth of stablecoins, including popular ones like USDT, USDC, TUSD, as well as decentralized stablecoins such as USDD and USDJ. Notably, the TRON network boasts a daily trading volume surpassing $12 billion, surpassing many other platforms trading in US dollars while maintaining significantly lower transaction costs.

Kirk Wagar pointed out during the conversation that there are still concerns in the market regarding cryptocurrencies.

Justin Sun believes that the key to effectively addressing these trust issues or alleviating market concerns lies in increasing transparency and ensuring decentralization.

“I think the primary way to address these doubts is by increasing transparency. It’s extremely important for regulators because they need to keep records and be able to permanently check, which can ensure everything is in order,” explained Justin Sun.

Furthermore, Justin Sun drew attention to the crucial aspect of decentralization, drawing parallels with the design principles of Bitcoin. He underscored the absence of a single controlling entity or nation in Bitcoin transactions, highlighting the importance of decentralized governance in establishing a global financial consensus. As the founder of TRON, Sun reiterated his unwavering commitment to decentralization, aligning with other prominent public chains like Ethereum and Solana. The operation of TRON relies on thousands of global nodes, ensuring transparency and decentralization, which in turn inspires confidence in regulatory agencies.

Asia’s Crypto Industry Ascends, Setting its Sights on Large-Scale Applications: Insights from Justin Sun at the Milken Institute Asia Summit

During the conversation, Justin Sun eloquently highlighted the remarkable ascent of Asia in the crypto domain. He elucidated that the crypto industry originated in Asia and has progressively expanded from China to encompass influential regions such as Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong. Presently, Asia has reclaimed its position as one of the world’s foremost crypto hubs.

Justin Sun emphasized that following the actions taken by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, numerous leading investment institutions in the United States have shifted their focus towards Asia. Consequently, they have dedicated the majority of the past three years to exploring opportunities in locations such as Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan. Sun believes that leveraging Asia as a pivotal battleground for the advancement of crypto technology can not only generate a broader range of use cases for the industry but also offer enhanced regulatory clarity. This, in turn, would facilitate the development process of the crypto industry in the United States.

During the conversation, Justin Sun shared his experience in promoting the adoption of crypto technology during his tenure at the World Trade Organization (WTO). He noted that while the WTO primarily focuses on traditional trade, a consensus has yet to be formed regarding e-commerce and blockchain. Nonetheless, Sun firmly believes that blockchain presents a cost-effective solution capable of providing financial services to underserved regions like Africa. Currently, an increasing number of individuals are embracing crypto technology as a daily payment solution, utilizing TRON network and decentralized methods for transactions. Sun acknowledged that fostering widespread adoption of crypto technology will require sustained efforts over the long term. However, he remains optimistic about the industry’s trajectory, expecting it to enter mainstream applications within the next 5 to 10 years.

Justin Sun remarked, “Although the crypto industry has a history of over a decade, it is still in a very early stage. Its ultimate objective is to achieve widespread adoption and large-scale applications. However, before reaching that milestone, several obstacles, including regulatory challenges and infrastructure enhancements, must be overcome to address user convenience and mitigate risks in daily usage. Establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework holds the key to unlocking substantial growth potential in the crypto industry. Currently, the number of crypto users stands at approximately 100 million. However, with clear regulations in place, the crypto industry envisions attracting 2-3 billion users within the next 3 to 5 years.” Justin Sun hopes to see regulatory progress in the next 6 to 12 months.

It is worth noting that the 2023 Milken Institute Asia Summit, now in its tenth edition, was hosted by the esteemed non-profit and nonpartisan think tank, Milken Institute, in the United States. This influential event centered around the theme “Bridging Complexity and Opportunity,” bringing together prominent figures from diverse fields such as politics and economics. Their collective efforts aimed to foster discussions on pressing global issues, including digital development and access to capital.

DETAILS OF THE CASE: The Complaint alleges that defendants made materially false and misleading statements. On February 23, 2023, before the stock market opened, Infinity announced via a webcast (the “Webcast”) that it had entered into a merger agreement with MEI Pharma, Inc. (“MEI”). The proposed transaction was all stock, pursuant to which Infinity shareholders would receive shares of MEI common stock. During the Webcast, Defendant Perkins stated Infinity would “prioritize head and neck cancer.” No mention at all was made of breast cancer treatments. It was as if MARIO-4 and MARIO-P never existed, and TNBC was never a priority for eganelisib treatment. This pivot did not go unnoticed by the stock market, and the value of Infinity stock plummeted. Infinity stock had closed at $0.55 on February 22, 2023.

On July 24, 2023, Infinity announced that it was terminating the merger because MEI did not obtain stockholder approval for the merger. On this news, Infinity’s stock price fell $0.09, or 40%, to close at $.13 per share on July 24, 2023, thereby injuring investors further.

Vietnam and China: comprehensive agricultural cooperation

GUANGXI, CHINA – Media OutReach – 16 September 2023 – In 2008, Vietnam and China established a comprehensive strategic partnership to expand, foster and deepen bilateral relations, increasing the prosperities and ensuring regional peace, stability and development.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the Vietnam-China Business Forum in Beijing on June 28.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the Vietnam-China Business Forum in Beijing on June 28.

At the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend the 20th ASEAN-China Expo (CAEXPO) and the China-ASEAN Business & Investment Summit (CABIS) held in Nanning, Guangxi region, China during September 16-17, 2023.

The two countries exchanged many high-level visits in recent years, contributed to raising comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and China to a new height. Particularly, the two Governments give close attention and clear direction for agriculture and rural development.

Currently, China is Vietnam’s largest trading partner and largest export market. It has surpassed the US to become the first largest export market for agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first 8 months of 2023.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan (right) received and worked with Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam Xiong Bo.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan (right) received and worked with Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam Xiong Bo.

Potential for agricultural, forestry and fishery trade

With its population of more than 1.4 billion people, accounting for 18.7% of the world population), the Chinese market has a large and diverse need to import goods, agricultural and aquatic products to serve domestic consumption and export processing.

Vietnam’s export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery (AFF) products to this market achieved a rapid and stable increase in recent years. In the period 2016-2021, AFF trade (export and import) between Vietnam and China increased from 8.57 billion USD in 2016 to 12.06 billion USD in 2021 (an annual average growth rate of 8.02%). AFF export value to China accounts for 20.76% of the total AFF export value (General Department of Vietnam Customs, 2021). Vietnam’s main export products to China include rubber (2.29 billion USD), vegetables (1.90 billion USD), wood and wood products (1.50 billion USD), cassava and products from cassava (1.1 billion USD), and aquatic products (976.4 million USD), etc.

In the first 8 months of 2023, AFF import-export turnover between Vietnam and China reached over 9.3 billion USD, an increase of 3.2% year-over-year. Particularly, Vietnam’s AFF exports to China are estimated to reach 7.28 billion USD, an increase of 9.8% year-over-year while Vietnam’s AFF imports from China are estimated to reach 2.04 billion USD, a decrease of 19.3% year-over-year. AFF trade surplus reached over 5.2 billion USD, an increase of 33.3% year-over-year.

There are similar geographic features and climate between southern provinces of China and Vietnam, that lead to a quite similar Vietnamese AFF consumption in China, especially for rice, seafood, vegetables, and fruits. As a close neighbors, China is an important target market for Vietnam’s fresh products such as vegetables, fruits and seafood.

Vietnam has a big potential for AFF exports to China in recent years. The growth rate only decreased in the period 2020-2021 due to impacts of Covid-19 pandemic in addition to China’s “Zero Covid” Policy resulting in certain difficulties in customs clearance process at land border gates.

Up to present, China has granted import licenses for 12 fruit, vegetable and milk products, 805 seafood processing facilities, 40 live crab and lobster packaging facilities and 5 black tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp packaging facilities besides 128 species/product types and 48 aquatic species from Vietnam. It also agreed to pilot import of passion fruit and chili from Vietnam. China authority has also coordinated with the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to conduct an online survey and assessment of Vietnam’s ability to export coconuts to China. Moreover, the two sides are closely coordinating to complete the “Investigation and assessment of the safety management system for frozen durian exported to China” and facilitate early signing of 02 Protocols on phytosanitary requirements for Vietnamese chili peppers and medicinal herbs exported to Chinese market.

More comprehensive, substantive and effective agricultural cooperation

Up to present, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD) and its Chinese partners have signed and implemented 20 Agreements/ Memorandums of Understanding (MOU)/ Protocols of various types in the field. This forms a solid legal basis for the two sides to establish premise for the development of agricultural, forestry and fishery trade between the two countries.

From the beginning of 2020 to the beginning of 2023, despite highly complicated Covid-19 pandemic, the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development successfully maintains and promotes relationships with China (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, General Department of Customs, and Chinese Embassy in Vietnam, etc.).

From May 29th to June 2nd, 2023, the working delegation of the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development led by Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam visited and worked with two provinces of Guangxi and Yunnan of China to enhance cooperation between MARD and the two provinces.

Currently, MARD is completing the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the People’s Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region which is expected to be signed on September 16, 2023 during Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit of the 20th China-ASEAN Business & Investment Summit (CABIS) held in Nanning, Guangxi region, China. The Memorandum of Cooperation between the MARD and Yunnan province is expected to be completed and signed in 2023.

Besides trade exchange, both Vietnam and China are paying attention to many other areas in agriculture.

Research institutes and universities/colleges under the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development currently have many highly practical cooperation programs with Chinese institutes/universities that solve many practical problems in science and technology, especially for plant and animal breeding.

According to Mr. Nguyen Do Anh Tuan, Director General of International Cooperation Department, MARD, Vietnam has taken measures to adjust production to meet the increasing quality requirements of the Chinese market.

Firstly, it maintains current stable market share of agricultural products (fruits, tapioca starch, and seafood) exported through northern border gates while increasing the added value of official-quota export products and the export of processed agricultural products (PAPs) to large cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, etc.

Secondly, it is necessary to improve the infrastructure system to serve export activities toward mutual investment by the state and businesses to increase the capacity to provide logistic services, bonded warehouses, tax-suspension warehouses, CFS warehouses, and form agricultural product supply centers in border gate areas.

Additionally, it is essential to build a number of agricultural logistics supply chains between Vietnam and China with the participation of large Vietnamese and Chinese enterprises in official-quota exports to create pervasiveness and promote synchronous logistics infrastructure development and gradually reduce unofficial-quota exports.

It also promotes official-quota exports, ensures exported AFF products are standardized and synchronized in quality, packaging, labeling, food safety and hygiene, and food traceability, with logo, trademark, and national brand.

At the same time, it is vital to bring into focus communication, propaganda, and warnings in addition to training support and awareness raising for businesses to promptly respond to such changes in China’s trade policy as Covid-19 pandemic.

It is practical to expand access to distribution channels in major cities and key localities of China through cooperation with Chinese associations and wholesale and retail businesses.

Finally, it is needed to strengthen the connection between Vietnamese and Chinese businesses through the establishment of the Vietnam AFF Exporters Association to connect and facilitate import and export of agricultural products between Vietnam and the two provinces of Guangxi and Yunnan of China.

Vietnam proposed the initiative and was very honoured and proud to be chosen by the IPU as the host country of the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians. Inheriting the success of the 132nd IPU Assembly in 2015, the 26th Annual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) in 2016, and the 41st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2020, the Vietnamese National Assembly’s hosting of this event continues to affirm Vietnam’s active and responsible participation in the IPU. At the same time, it shows Vietnam’s priority and concern for young people and global current issues of the youth.

After 37 years of implementing Doi Moi (Renewal) process, since 1986, Vietnam has gained important, comprehensive and historically significant achievements. Vietnam has obtained miracles in building new-style rural areas and sustainable poverty reduction, being a bright spot in implementing the Millennium Goals and the UN Sustainable Development Agenda (SDGs) towards 2030, and has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The country’s annual economic growth reaches a high level of about 6 per year. The scale of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2022 at current prices ranked 38th in the world. Based on purchasing power parity (PPP), according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Vietnam ranks 10th in Asia and 24th in the world. Total import-export turnover in 2022 topped nearly US$735 billion, making Vietnam among top 20 countries with the largest foreign trade turnover in the world. Vietnam has also been successful in attracting Foreign Direct Investment with so far more than 37,000 investment projects from 143 countries and territories worth a registered capital of nearly $450 billion.

Vietnam has made efforts to realise two 100-year goals:

By 2030 which falls on the 100th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Vietnam looks to become a developing country with a modern industrial base and middle-income population; and by 2045, which falls on the 100th anniversary of the country’s establishment, Vietnam will be a developed and high-income country.

We are entering the third decade of the 21st century with countless unpredictable events. For the first time, the whole world experienced the COVID-19 pandemic with unprecedented scale and incurring losses far exceeding all predictions. It can be said that never before has the political, economic and international security environment faced so many difficulties and challenges at the same time as today. The persistent and complex impact of the pandemic, combined with geopolitical tensions and conflicts, competition, strategic separation, fluctuations and instability in the food, energy, financial and monetary markets, decline in investment, disruption of supply chains have erased many achievements of poverty reduction and development over the past decades. These all have posed enormous, multi-dimensional difficulties, both in the immediate and long term for many countries around the world. The implementation of the UN’s SDGs is slowing down, making it difficult to complete the goals. In addition, non-traditional security issues, especially the negative impacts of climate change, are directly affecting the people, security and development of every country.

But we still have the right to be optimistic and hopeful about the future. Peace, cooperation and development are still the main flow and big trend. The world has overcome the pandemic. The pandemic does not make us collapse, but makes us more united and stronger. The trends of digital transformation, green transformation and innovation are being widely promoted. While globalisation faces difficulties, a series of new economic linkage and cooperation initiatives at both regional and global levels continue to be accelerated. A world without war and a society without hunger and poverty are a wish and a common goal of global cooperation efforts.

International delegates attend the opening ceremony.

With the theme “The Role of Young People in Promoting the Realisation of Sustainable Development Goals via Digital Transformation and Innovations ” and thematic discussion sessions on digital transformation, innovation and entrepreneurship and promoting respect for cultural diversity for sustainable development, I recommend delegates discuss the content as follows:

First, what needs to be done and how to comply with and ensure international law and the UN Charter, which serves as a key condition to preserve and cultivate peace, cooperation and sustainable development?

Second, the role of developed countries, international organisations, the business community and young people in addressing global issues, for example, sustainable and safe digital transformation; equitable energy transition, adaptation to climate change and strong diffusion of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Third, in order to make people and businesses to truly be the centre of all decisions in the development process, both the goal, the driving force and the basic resource in all resources, what and how do we need to continue to do in planning, implementing laws and organising actions towards the happiness of the people?

Fourth, promoting cultural and human values in sustainable development, promoting respect for cultural diversity in the context of the 4th industrial revolution; tightening cooperation in innovating ways to operate the economy, sharply increasing labour productivity, creating new driving forces for economic growth, and at the same time, helping State agencies operate more transparently, effectively on the digitalisation roadmap, to narrow the development gap and ensure national sovereignty as well as personal privacy in cyberspace.

Fifth, I suggest that IPU research and establish a network of global young parliamentarians on innovation to exchange and learn from each other’s experience.

Late President Ho Chi Minh – the genius leader of the Vietnamese people and the world cultural celebrity – used the image of spring – the most beautiful season of the year to describe the youth: “A year begins in the spring. A life begins in youth. Youth is the spring of society”. He also said: “Youth are the future owners of the country. In-deed, prosperity or decline, strength or weak-ness of the country all come from youth.”

Youth and young people are the force taking on the mission and historical responsibility in the integration and development of each country and the common prosperity of the world. I believe that every young parliamentarian from member parliaments will promote their intelligence, youth, creativity, responsibility and enthusiasm to actively contribute to the success of the conference.

With that strong belief, I would like to declare the opening of the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians.

Wishing you good health and happiness.

Wishing the young parliamentarians have productive working days as well as interesting and memorable experience in our beautiful and hospitable country!
