Japan Funds Teacher Training Facilities in Nine Provinces of Laos

This Week

Laos and Japan signed an agreement to provide grant aid aimed at enhancing Provincial Teacher Development Centers in Laos during a bilateral meeting held in Japan on 21 January.

The fund, amounting to JYN 1.27 billion (USD 8.1 million) will focus on upgrading facilities and training equipment such as projectors and sound systems in nine provinces across Laos.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, enhancing human resources and improving the quality of the labor force are crucial steps for Laos to achieve sustainable social and economic development. Strengthening basic education is also a key priority, as it forms the foundation for progress in these areas.

The Lao government has recognized the need to improve teachers’ skillsets and is committed to building an effective system to reach this goal.

Although eight teacher training colleges have been established nationwide, many provinces without access to these institutions rely heavily on provincial teacher development centers. These centers play a crucial role in offering in-service teacher training in areas that lack advanced training facilities.

However, these centers face significant challenges, including inadequate facilities and outdated equipment, which hinder their ability to deliver effective training programs.

The project, supported by Japan’s grant aid, seeks to address these issues by upgrading facilities and modernizing equipment. This will enable the centers to offer more effective training programs, ultimately improving the overall quality of education in Laos.
