Prudential officially launches global AI Lab in Singapore

  • The AI Lab will collaborate with ecosystem partners including government agencies, research organisations, and technology firms.
  • The Lab will also work with institutes of higher learning to provide local students with hands-on experiences and internships.

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – 19 November 2024 – Prudential plc (“Prudential”) today launched the Prudential AI Lab in Singapore, with the aim of accelerating the adoption of AI, generative AI (gen AI) and machine learning organisation-wide. The launch ceremony, held at the Prudential Singapore office, was officiated by Mrs Josephine Teo, Singapore’s Minister for Digital Development and Information (MDDI) and Mr Anil Wadhwani, Chief Executive Officer of Prudential plc. As the Guest-of-Honour of the launch event, Mrs Teo gave a speech and toured a showcase of AI solutions in the health and wealth domains, presented by Prudential’s AI experts.

The Prudential AI Lab will incubate AI-powered solutions designed to deliver a better customer experience and meaningful business impact, while integrating AI capabilities into Prudential’s operations, services and products. Following its soft launch in August 2024, more than 100 AI use cases have been submitted to the Lab by employees across Prudential’s 24 markets in Asia and Africa.

The Prudential AI Lab was developed with support from the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI), the Economic Development Board of Singapore (EDB) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). It has been launched in partnership with Google Cloud, which is providing Prudential employees with end-to-end technical support and access to advanced AI solutions.

The Lab will prioritise solutions that improve consumer access to quality healthcare and drive operational excellence at Prudential. AI will also enable financial representatives to serve customers better and faster with strengthened advisory capabilities. The Lab will be staffed by a dedicated team of AI engineers and data scientists based in Singapore.

Anil Wadhwani, Chief Executive Officer, Prudential plc, said: “Data, advanced analytics and AI are crucial to the delivery of our strategic priorities. Prudential’s AI Lab will significantly enhance our ability to deliver exceptional experiences for our customers, agents and financial representatives, across all markets.”

Commenting on the collaboration with the Singapore government, Mr Wadhwani said: “Singapore was selected as the location of Prudential’s global AI Lab for its robust infrastructure and supportive environment for AI innovation, highlighted by its National AI Strategy (NAIS 2.0)1. Our partnership with EDB and MAS allows us to tap into Singapore’s rich network of resources and talent from academia, business and government. This collaboration will greatly support our ability to develop innovative solutions that address customer and business challenges while building even stronger AI capabilities.”

Ms Gillian Tan, Assistant Managing Director (Development and International) and Chief Sustainability Officer of MAS, said: “Prudential’s AI Lab is aligned with Singapore’s Smart Nation 2.0 goal to encourage businesses to utilise AI and technology to raise productivity, transform and serve customers better. MAS will continue to support financial institutions as they develop capabilities and harness AI to enhance their customer and advisory services, fraud detection, and risk insights generation.”

Nurturing AI innovators through a strong ecosystem

The Lab will collaborate closely with ecosystem partners, such as institutes of higher learning (IHLs), research centres, government agencies and technology partners.

It already has agreements with several IHLs including the National University of Singapore Asian Institute of Digital Finance, Singapore Management University School of Computing and Information Systems, Republic Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic. The Lab will engage students from these local schools to nurture the next generation of AI experts by offering hands-on experiences as well as fostering knowledge sharing and innovation.

Students on their internships with Prudential and those whose final year projects are selected will work alongside the Lab, its partner ecosystem, as well as Prudential’s business units to build proofs-of-concept for selected use cases.

Green Tourism Sparks a New Era for Vietnamese Hospitality, with Vinpearl at the Lead

As travelers prioritize sustainability in a post-pandemic world, Vietnamese resorts are adapting. One leader in this trend is Vinpearl, a major resort chain in Vietnam committed to both environmental responsibility and guest satisfaction.

HANOI, VIETNAM – Media OutReach Newswire – 19 November 2024 – As the world moves on from the pandemic, its effects continue to linger, particularly in the travel and hospitality industry. One significant impact has been a shift in consumer mindset and behavior. Sustainability, once a secondary concern, has now become central to travelers’ priorities.

Vinpearl was recently recognized as one of the “Top 3 Strongest Brands” in Southeast Asia by Brand Finance, a leading global brand valuation firm.
Vinpearl was recently recognized as one of the “Top 3 Strongest Brands” in Southeast Asia by Brand Finance, a leading global brand valuation firm.

“Across the globe, sustainable travel as a concept and practice has moved from the back of travelers’ minds to claim a dominant position in the decision-making process,” wrote Jane Sun, CEO of Trip.com in an essay last year.

In Vietnam, the trend is also moving toward sustainability and eco-friendliness, especially in the resort sector. Resorts have adapted by focusing on environmental preservation, renewable energy use, and plastic waste reduction, while also protecting local ecosystems. They also offer unique, culturally rich experiences by blending modern architecture with traditional elements and using locally sourced materials.

One standout name in Vietnam’s resort scene is Vinpearl, a subsidiary of Vingroup. Boasting a chain of hotels, resorts, spas, conference centers, restaurants, golf courses, and 5-star entertainment complexes, Vinpearl has become a household name. Over its 20-year journey, the brand has established 45 facilities across 17 provinces in Vietnam, offering over 18,500 rooms and villas, three theme parks, two amusement parks, two semi-wildlife conservation parks, and four golf courses.

Anticipating the green tourism trend, Vinpearl has made sustainability a central tenet of its strategy, balancing environmental responsibility with business growth objectives. All its facilities incorporate resource-saving and energy-efficient solutions, such as rainwater harvesting systems for irrigation and closed-loop wastewater treatment systems that meet international standards.

Vinpearl actively promotes green tourism through initiatives like Green Tours to organic farms, workshops on cooking with eco-friendly ingredients, environmental awareness events such as runs, recycling workshops, and tree-planting activities. These initiatives not only enhance the guest experience but also foster community involvement and environmental awareness.

The efforts of Vinpearl and other hospitality brands have fueled a strong rebound in Vietnam’s travel industry. This year, inbound tourism has surged past pre-pandemic levels. According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), nearly 1.6 million foreign arrivals were recorded in April alone, a 58.2% increase compared to the same period last year. In the first four months of the year, international arrivals totaled 6.2 million, a remarkable 68.3% year-on-year growth, surpassing the “golden era” of pre-pandemic tourism.

Vinpearl’s commitment to innovation has been widely acknowledged. The brand was recently recognized as one of the “Top 3 Strongest Brands” in Southeast Asia by Brand Finance, a leading global brand valuation firm. Vinpearl’s brand value grew an impressive 34% in the past year to reach $230 million, with a Brand Strength Index (BSI) score of 89.7 out of 100, earning the coveted AAA+ rating.

“[Vinpearl’s] significant rise in brand value was fueled by Vingroup’s launch of the new VinWonders theme park, which boosted its revenue. The brand’s BSI score also improved, driven by strong scores for the ‘recommendations’ and ‘reputation’ metrics,” wrote the report.

In 2024, Vinpearl has worked to refresh its offerings with new experiences and features. Highlights include the launch of a Vinpearl Horse Academy in Vũ Yên, and Vinpearl Harbour, an all-day entertainment, dining, and shopping complex. Unique features like the Indochine-inspired shopping streets, live-action seaside stunt shows, and Aquafield Nha Trang, Vietnam’s first high-end Korean-style spa and sauna, promise unforgettable experiences for visitors.

Vinpearl is also accelerating its global reach through strategic partnerships and promotional activities. In September, the brand signed memoranda of understanding with leading names in the U.S. music and film industries to promote Vietnamese culture and beauty globally. Additionally, Vinpearl organized customer appreciation events and signed strategic agreements to expand its presence in South Korea. Other promotional activities have targeted markets including India, China, Taiwan, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Poland, France, Italy, and Germany.

With its relentless drive for innovation and expanding global presence, Vinpearl is well-positioned to thrive beyond the post-pandemic “revenge travel” boom. Its commitment to sustainability and excellence ensures that it remains a leader in Vietnam’s travel industry and a promising player on the international stage.

Laos, Japan Partner to Develop Advanced Digital Identity System

Laos, Japan Partner to Develop Advanced Digital Identity System
Laos, Japan Partner to Develop Advanced Digital Identity System

The Lao and Japanese governments are collaborating to develop and implement a digital identity system in Laos through a partnership with Japanese companies.

The initiative is being organized by the Digital Government Center under the Lao Ministry of Technology and Communications, in cooperation with Ryobi Systems, Ryobi Lao, and funded by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. A workshop was held to promote digital identity as a crucial tool for enhancing public services in Laos.

The workshop aimed to share lessons and experiences from various countries regarding digital identity systems and explore their potential applications in Laos. It also featured a demonstration of trial digital identity registration using Japanese simulation technology.

During the seminar, several topics were discussed, including the importance of digital identity verification in public services, insights into Japan’s digital identity system, and lessons learned from other countries. The workshop also included a live demonstration of registration through a simulation system and discussions on developing services for different sectors that would rely on digital identity verification.

Keovisouk Soraphom, a representative from the Lao Ministry of Technology and Communications, stated that the development of a digital identity verification system is a critical step that needs to be urgently planned and implemented.

The official explained that it would enable businesses and individuals to access public and private services more easily. He noted that while some sectors in Laos already use basic verification methods such as email or social media accounts, these do not involve official identity verification. As online services expand, Keovisouk emphasized that a secure and reliable identity verification system would become indispensable.

This demonstration marks the second phase of collaboration between the Lao Ministry of Technology and Communications and Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Japanese partner companies, including Ryobi System, NEC, J&C, and Ryobi Lao, are working together to develop a comprehensive digital identity system for Laos. Trial registrations are being conducted at various locations in Vientiane capital, with the initiative set to continue until December 2024.

After the election: Assessing Investor Sentiment in Hong Kong and Singapore Post-Trump’s Election

Hong Kong and Singapore investors plan to increase investment allocation to the US market by 3% to 5% next year

  • Survey by MDRi highlights rising concerns in Hong Kong and Singapore about the deteriorating US-China relationship following Trump’s election
  • Hong Kong investors exhibit greater confidence in the US market, contrasting with a more cautious outlook from Singaporean investors
  • Investment decisions are influenced by market volatility, interest rate changes, and perceptions of Trump’s economic policies

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 19 November 2024 – In the wake of Donald Trump’s election as the next US President, a recent survey conducted by MDRi, a business insights provider, reveals significant differences in investor sentiment between Hong Kong and Singapore. The survey, which included 500 participants from each market, sought to understand the implications of the US election outcome on regional economic perspectives.

Image1

In this survey, respondents from both markets were asked to identify the candidate they believed would most likely enhance the global economic climate. A striking contrast emerged between the two markets: while a significant 70% of individuals in Hong Kong favoured Donald Trump, only half of the respondents in Singapore shared this view (See figures 1a and 1b).

Both the Hong Kong and Singapore markets recognize the significant influence of the US-China relationship on their local economies’ growth trajectories, with 44% in Hong Kong and 46% in Singapore acknowledging its importance (See figure 2).

However, there is a shared concern in both markets regarding the potential deterioration of the US-China relationship following Donald Trump’s presidency, with 40% in Hong Kong and 46% in Singapore expecting it to worsen (See figure 3).

Among Hong Kong millennials aged 30-44, 35% anticipate a worsening of US-China relations— slightly lower than the overall average of 40%. Conversely, older generations in Singapore display heightened concerns, with 53% of those aged 45 and above fearing negative consequences, compared to the total average of 46%.

Image2

Among Hong Kong investors, the bulk of their investments are currently allocated to the Hong Kong market (58%), with the US market following behind at 19%. Following the 2024 US election and a heightened sense of optimism towards the global economy, there is a notable shift in investment plans among Hong Kong investors for 2025, with a planned increase in investment allocation to the US market (rising from 19% to 24%, see figure 4).

24% of Hong Kong investors plan to invest more in the US market. And when we compare to the older age group, Gen Z and Millennials intend to invest more in the US market after the 2024 US election (See figure 5). The shift in investment from the Hong Kong market to the US market reflects a growing confidence among younger investors in the US economy, coupled with a sense of pessimism regarding the local economic outlook.

Image3

Similarly, Singaporean investors are displaying a comparable investment trend. Currently, 60% of their investments are allocated to the local Singapore market, while the US market comprises 19% of their portfolio. Following the 2024 US election, there is an increasing interest among Singaporean investors to boost their US market investments, with the allocation projected to rise from 19% to 22% (See figure 6). Notably, 18% of Singaporean investors plan to increase their US investments in 2025 after the election (See figure 7).

Image4

Both Hong Kong and Singapore investors are exhibiting a shift in investment sentiment towards the US market following the 2024 US election. This shift underscores a growing confidence among investors from both regions in the US market. This change in investment focus may also be influenced by a decrease in confidence in the local and Asia-Pacific economies, as highlighted in the preceding sections.

Key factors influencing investment decisions for Hong Kong investors include market volatility (53%), interest rate changes (52%), and Trump’s economic policies (50%). In Singapore, the pivotal considerations are interest rate changes (58%) and economic policies (55%), with Hong Kong investors placing greater emphasis on international relations (45%) compared to their Singaporean counterparts (31%) (See figures 8a and 8b).

Image5

Simon Tye, CEO of MDRi, commented: “Our survey results show clearly how the election of Donald Trump is shaping investor sentiment in Hong Kong and Singapore. While Hong Kong investors demonstrate a more bullish outlook towards the US market, Singaporean investors express notable caution. These differing perspectives highlight the impact of geopolitical dynamics on local economic confidence, which businesses must navigate in the evolving landscape.”

Signed initially in 2019, the renewed MOI will extend the collaboration for another five years. As part of the MOI, DHL Group’s Disaster Response Team (DRT) will assist the AHA Centre during disasters and be primarily responsible for airport ground handling of humanitarian relief cargo at airports or an alternative point of entry (except seaports).

DHL’s Disaster Response Team will handle, sort, inventorize, and store incoming relief cargo at an airport or other point of entry except for seaports. Other than managing airside or landside relief cargo operations, DRT will also help with customs processes if requested by the AHA Centre or ASEAN Member States.

“A successful DRT deployment requires strong public-private partnerships and we are proud to continue our work with AHA Centre to help them achieve the One ASEAN, One Response vision. According to the World Meteorological Organization, Asia was the world’s most disaster-hit region from climate and weather hazards in 2023.

This is why it is even more important now that we work with organizations like AHA Centre to assist disaster-affected areas in Southeast Asia quickly,” said Carl Schelfhaut, Head of the GoHelp Program for Asia Pacific, DHL Group.

The DRTs are part of DHL Group’s GoHelp disaster management program, which it has operated in partnership with the United Nations (UN) since 2005. Through this partnership, the Group provides the UN and national disaster management agencies with pro bono access to its core logistics expertise, and the logistics skills of specially trained employee volunteers worldwide who can deploy within 72 hours after a natural disaster.

As one of the AHA Centre’s longstanding partners, DHL has played a pivotal role in ensuring efficient logistics support during emergency response. “Through this continued collaboration, the AHA Centre and DHL have consistently demonstrated their shared commitment to building a more disaster-resilient region,” said Lee Yam Ming, the Executive Director of the AHA Centre. The most recent emergency response demonstrated collaboration between the AHA Centre and DHL was the mobilization of ASEAN relief items during Tropical Cyclone Yagi in October.

Mr. Lee highlighted that this partnership will further enhance disaster responses, particularly during emergencies, by facilitating the swift deployment of relief items from the regional warehouses to the affected communities and the overall effectiveness of relief operations.

DHL Group’s DRTs are comprised of specially trained volunteer employees from across the Group’s business units, including DHL Express, DHL Global Forwarding, DHL Supply Chain and DHL eCommerce. The teams are located in the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe Middle East and Africa, covering all disaster-prone countries.

Since 2005, multiple DRT deployments have taken place in Southeast Asia, involving more than 120 volunteers in Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines.

In addition to the DRT deployments, the Group’s Get Airports Ready for Disaster initiative – also part of the GoHelp program – trains airport management in high-risk regions to be better prepared should disaster strike.
